Nature Trails to Inspire Your Next Move

“Some of the best memories are made in hiking shoes.” – Unknown

A big, hearty hug and hello to Spring – our favourite season.

Spring adventures mean chirping birds sound even happier, budding flowers begin their blooming, and the warm sunshine starts to replace the winter brrrr. Hiking in spring can mean an excellent change in your pace after being indoors during chilly weather. While hiking at popular spots around your area is the best way to get your hiking passion lit, travelling to awesome well-known hiking spots can keep you healthy and happy in vacation-vibe mode. We’ve got a list of top hiking spots in SA and great tips on how to make the most of your trip when it comes to hiking holidays.

There’s just something about that feeling of having nothing to do but set off on a hike and discover 1) the terrain, 2) fellow hikers, and 3) yourself, on the climb. Escaping the hustle and bustle of everyday routine starts with booking a weekend away or putting in leave at work and taking on the ultimate hiking challenge, no matter your level of fitness. Never even thought of a hiking holiday in the first place? Don’t worry! Walking trails marry the best of both worlds when it comes to nature and your adventure level.

Prime Time To Take a HIKE

Hiking is considered a low-intensity form of aerobic exercise. According to popular fitness brand NIKE, “Hiking can help reduce stress and boost mental health.” All the more reason to grab your hiking boots and pick a trail, quickly! Taking a hiking holiday has become a new trend in recent years, and in this article from NIKE, it’s so interesting to note just how important hiking can be… “…in Scotland, as part of their medical system, prescriptions are written for outdoor hikes to lower feelings of stress, lower blood pressure and improve overall health.” (Rand McClain) That is how powerful a walk can be, and the best part is you can do it solo, as a duo or with your whole squad in tow – it all depends on you and your travel mood. Take that time in nature and return to luxurious relaxation instead of the dishes, washing or helping the kids with homework. Because, while we may love our lives, sometimes to add that extra spring to your step: YOU JUST NEED TO TAKE A HIKE! ON HOLIDAY!

It’s an opportunity to amplify the magic that the changeover to the spring season brings. Whether you’re a nature trailblazer or mountain hiker, in SA, there are tons of options. What’s the difference?  Well, walks are shorter in duration and can be enjoyed by any age group with relative fitness. While hikes tend to be a little longer and harder walking-wise, they are usually on trails through the mountains or through bush or over countryside terrain. Hiking in South Africa is a spectacular experience for locals and tourists alike. Where you stay is the most important aspect for an all-round awesome hiking holiday experience, and we have all the details you need right here.

Cape Town Hiking Trails

Hiking Tip: Choose the right shoe and sock combo.

If you’re looking for a versatile spot with plenty of choices when it comes to walking and hiking trails for all levels of adventure, Cape Town has so much on offer. There are more than 25 top hiking trails in and around Cape Town alone. We know you can’t do ALL of them in one trip – but if you’re hoping to tick off a few of the popular ones or try new trails, you will not go wrong with a trip to the Mother City. The Table Mountain and Lion’s Head trails, of course, head the list. Table Mountain is a 3km (on average) hike and takes approximately three hours to complete. Lion’s Head hike is a 5 km trail but is more moderate in difficulty – depending on your pace, frequent hikers say the round trip should only take 2-3 hours. It’s one of the best spring hikes to consider because the landscape transforms from winter dryness to a sparkling glow of new growth.

These hikes are suited to any time of day, from sunrise to sunset. But what you do before and after the hike can also help enhance the experience. Choosing the ideal place to stay in close proximity to the hiking trail can help logistics-wise, hearty breakfasts to build up the energy help keep you ready for the climb, pools for warm-up swims before the trek begins make the build-up even more exciting, and a spa treatment like a foot or full body massage after the walk ensures you’re looking after your overall wellbeing. It’s about the right balance of comfort before and after the challenge of the climb.

Table Mountain is about 10 km from Bantry Bay, a popular resort that hugs the craggy rockface a short distance from Cape Town’s Clifton Beach. It has comfy rooms and a swimming pool with a leisure deck right on the ocean’s edge. An added benefit is that this resort is so close to Sea Point’s Millionaire’s Mile with the V&A Waterfront within easy reach and tons of exciting hotspots to enjoy like pubs, clubs, cafes, and restaurants. Or warm up for the walk/hike with a stroll through the Two Oceans Aquarium or the many museums and art galleries the Mother City is known for.

Mount Sierra ticks all these Cape hiking holiday boxes and more. It’s got Table Mountain right in its backyard as it’s located in the heart of Cape Town. It’s perfect for solo, couples or group hiking holidays with one- and two-bedroom offerings which provide cosy rooms with all the home comforts, plus a heated indoor pool and wellness centre onsite. The added benefit of staying here is that there are multiple hiking/walking trails under 15 min away: The Pipe Track trail is 6 min away | The Kasteelspoort trail is 10 min away | The Tranquility Cracks trail is 10 min away | The Platteklip Gorge trail is 12 min away | The Maclear’s Beacon trail is 14 min away!

Also, when you’re in Cape Town, don’t forget to visit the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. Here, there are always flowers and interesting plants to be seen in every season, but to enjoy the maximum number of plants in flower & to witness the fynbos at its best means the optimal time to visit is in spring or early summer. It’s great for those looking for a colourfully picturesque walking trail in celebration of all things blooming good.

Hiking Tip: Plan ahead & check the weather

Best Hikes on the KZN Coast

The KZN Coast is a truly special place for hiking and walking trails because of its many beaches and lush landscapes that sparkle, particularly in spring. When visiting Durban, your trail choices include hiking hotspots as well as flat routes that make walking a breeze. Tons of parks and gardens such as the Japanese Gardens, Botanical Gardens and Mitchell Park have popular walking trails which can be an excellent warm-up to the main event trails at Paradise Valley or even the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve. And, of course, let’s not forget the stretches of beaches including the Durban Beachfront promenade, which is about 8 km in length, making it the longest beachfront promenade in sub-Saharan Africa. If you go further north or south, you are met with even more possibilities for awe-inspiring hikes and unmatchable views where the Indian Ocean meets the edge of the continent.

As the seasons change, Durban always seems to warm up first. The Palace on North Beach, right by the famous promenade, is ideally situated for those sunrise beach walks on the actual sand for a level-up kinda walk or to end the day with breaks along the promenade for sundowner pitstops. The accommodation is luxurious, with a pool for a post-walk swim and a La Vita wellness spa so you can take in a treatment to ease sore muscles, or just pamper yourself with a foot massage to put the spring back in your step. If you’re looking for something a little more adventurous, Paradise Valley, under 20km away from The Palace, has four distinct hiking trails in a full-on natural environment that is a little more challenging than the beachfront’s promenade. It’s peaceful and provides a powerful experience in nature right on the edge of the city.

Hiking Tip: Apply sunscreen before and during the hike for the best protection from the glorious sun!

KZN North Coast Hiking Trails

Another great promenade on the KZN Coast is in the resort town of Umhlanga Rocks and Cabana Beach Resort is the best choice for accommodation when visiting the northern parts of the city. Walk on the promenade (3 km), right on the beach, or venture a little further and take on the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve trail (1.6 km). A highlight of this trail is the pedestrian bridge that enhances the prime spot you are traversing, from ocean views and sub-tropical greenery to bird and smaller wildlife encounters. At Cabana Beach, the options are endless. Before the walk/hike, warm up with a game of squash or tennis. After the walk, retire to your comfy room and enjoy sea views, tuck into scrumptious cuisine at the onsite restaurants, relax with a treatment at the beauty salon, or take a dip in one of the swimming pools. It’s the perfect ‘relax’ after a nice long walk, whether you’re going solo, with bae or with your whole crew.

Hiking Tip: Carry water to stay hydrated & a hat to protect you from the sun

And if you want to venture even further north on the KZN Coast, Ballito and St. Lucia have amazing tranquil spots completely away from the hustle and bustle of city life, with multiple options for walking trails and hikes. For instance, if you stay at La Montagne in Ballito you can enjoy the Ballito promenade (4 km) or go further north and stay at Lake View Cabanas in St. Lucia and take on the St. Lucia Estuary Board Walk (2.4 km), the Gwalagwala Trail (2.3 km) in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, or head straight to the beach and take on the whopping 15 km Main Beach Walk – but you can choose how far you wander!

Best Beach Hikes

The Hole in the Wall hiking trail is a popular path along the Wild Coast and features the famous rock formation after which it is named. It’s an 8.4-km trail near Coffee Bay and is a moderately challenging route. Frequent hikers say it takes an average of 2h 43min to complete. This trail is a hotspot for hiking and strolling, yet it unveils moments of serene solitude during its quieter hours. And if you’re not into the ‘formal trail’ route, blaze your own path, creating footprints in the sand on the beach when you stay at the Hole in the Wall resort, located right in the natural bay. The sun and surf make it a nature lover’s beach paradise for hikes and strolls, all at your own pace.

The Hole in the Wall resort also has tons on offer for the solo traveller or couples, from scrumptious meals and drink specials at the onsite restaurant to a wellness spa for that ‘me-time’ or ‘we-time’ spoil after the hike. If you’re taking the whole family, the kids can enjoy a playground and trampoline, plus a swimming pool and, of course, the beach is right there for added fun. Or take a day trip and explore the Addo Elephant Park and Mapuzi Caves nearby. Dive into nature with surfing, cycling, snorkelling, and horseback riding. There is so much to fill your time with before or after your epic hike. Also… the hikes and the walks are geared for those second honeymoon vibes hand-in-hand with bae, and the background is stunning for those extra-special profile pics and Insta snaps!

Hiking Tip: Pack your phone, and make sure it’s charged – pic for the summit or to make an important phone call.

Best Bush or Berg Hikes

When thinking about hiking and summits, the mountains are a prime place to be. Even Bush walks where you can encounter wildlife on the way and cool countryside hikes means you can truly take in nature in all its springtime glory. There are popular and classic routes like the Milestone Forest Walk (30 min to 1hr walks) on the Balgowan Conservancy in the Midlands or even the Fort Nottingham Nature Reserve where a trailblazer review from Carlo de Castro, who gave it 5 stars, stated: “The Tony Kerr trail was a little hidden gem. An easy stroll through a beautiful little forrest. It is well sign posted, so you can walk through on your own.”  The Midlands and Berg are great choices for those memorable hikes in crisp mountain and countryside air.

When you’re travelling there, spend the night (or two) at Bushman’s Nek (Drakensberg) or book in at Midlands Saddle & Trout (Midlands) as there are plenty of hiking and walking trails close by. Plus, both resorts have choices of unit/chalet size, so if you’re going solo, as a pair or couple, or with your whole squad, you’re covered. Also, don’t forget to take a dip in the swimming pool, soak in the heated pool, grab some chow from the onsite restaurants, and fill the rest of your time warming up to the hike with activities like adventure golf, horse riding, cycling, fishing and more.

Hiking Tip: Make sure you have the proper amount of food (before) and snacks for an energy boost along the way – fruit or snack bars are great!

Magalies Park in the North West Province is a wonderfully relaxing resort to warm up to wilderness hikes or cool down after completing a walking trail. The resort itself is on a pristine golf course, close to the Hartbeespoort Dam. So, the choices for walking trails and hikes are endless. Even a walk through the resort brings wildlife encounters and a great chance to stretch your legs with pit stops along the way… during a game of paintball or a walk from the paintball arena to the heated pools for a quick dip before a slow and steady walk to the La Vita Spa onsite for a rejuvenating spa treatment. The Magalies Park Trail (4.3 km) is also right next to the resort, offering an amped-up hike option for those looking to go the distance

Hiking is such a totally versatile activity. You can start wherever you are. Walking trails are great if you’re just starting out. Or you can take on the big challenges, reaching summits inside and out, when you’re ready. But ultimately, it’s up to you and what you’re hoping to get from your choice of hike/trail.

As the vibrant blooms of spring paint the landscape, it’s the perfect time to heed the call of adventure and embark on a hiking journey along South Africa’s diverse and breathtaking trails. Spring’s arrival signals a chance to bid farewell to the winter chill and embrace the rejuvenating warmth of the sun while exploring nature’s hidden gems. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker seeking a challenging ascent or a nature enthusiast looking to reconnect with the great outdoors, these trails offer a gateway to self-discovery and tranquillity. Like they say: when in doubt, walk it out!

Here’s a few ideas of where to go, and what your options are as you put pen to paper and plan your next gastronomic trip.

Durban Curries & Best Bunny Chows

The Coast has the most! Only because the sea is right there, staying at a coastal resort can mean tucking into the freshest seafood on offer. But if Durban is in your sights, this city brings a whole new punch of packed flavour and spice – which can make your travel there more than ‘nice!’ We’re talking about curry and bunny chows at its best.

Breakers Resort, in Umhlanga, is the perfect Foodie holiday headquarters to book for its prime coastal location, sea views and access to the rest of Umhlanga (and North and South Coasts) for all the added fun both foodie and just in general. The rooms are luxurious and comfy serving your every need and the onsite restaurant, Reef Café, offers a laid-back dining experience with daily specials, serving simple yet delectable food, skilfully crafted and presented by attentive and friendly staff. It’s where you can enjoy a casual and comfortable dining experience while soaking up the beachside vibes.

You may be wondering… So, where’s the bunny chows? Hang on… we’re getting there… Bunny Chows and Curry spots are EVERYWHERE in Durban and the surrounding areas! Umhlanga, the outer Durban area and the North Coast are teemed with curry dens and bunny chow championship restaurants where you could have a new curry or bunny chow in a new spot for EVERY MEAL during your holiday. But to make life a little easier, here’s a few top spots in Umhlanga, near Breakers and nearby – plus two places that will be worth taking the Uber trip to visit for a sit-down meal or takeaway chow.

In Umhlanga, try CaneCutters and Cumin Cafétwo curry and bunny chow hot spots you will not regret visiting. If you’re looking for authentic Durban-style curry and Durban’s Best Bunny Chow, it is a must-stop for lunch, dinner or takeout.

There are two other top Durban curry spots that you must experience when taking a curry cuisine travel tour: Goundens (in Durban) and Capsicum Restaurant (at the Britannia Hotel.) The locals keep going back to these two places after decades of top tastes and the overall experience. IF you haven’t already been, find out for yourself and add these to your foodie bucket list, for sho! If you’ve been, you KNOW what we’re talking about: GO BACK and enjoy!

Best Braai

Braai (South African Barbeque) or Shisa Nyama is more than just a way of cooking meat, it’s a cultural institution that brings people together over good food and good company. Whether you’ve been to countless braais or are yet to experience the ultimate epic braai, we’re here to say: It’s WORTH IT! Shisa Nyama means “burnt meat” and many South Africans crave this char on their meat, regularly. So, if you’re a foodie looking for the true taste of SA, book your holiday at The Palace All-Suite resort on Durban’s Golden Mile in North Beach, and get ready to savour the best Shisa Nyama in Durban from the onsite restaurant Pesto where they have a Shisa Nyama platter for 1 on their permanent menu!! Oh yeah!

This resort also has a second seated restaurant option, THE SUN LOUNGE, located on the 5th floor and is a modern, luxurious lounge restaurant where you can sit back in comfort while enjoying the best food indulgence on North Beach.

Durban is also scattered with public spots where you can braai yourself or a short drive up the hill can bring you to Braai BOSS KZN in Windermere where great traditional and spit braai options await to satisfy your braai craving – to include sausages, lamb, chicken, as well as sides like potato salad and 3-bean salad.

If you’re not looking for a coastal culinary experience in Durban, don’t stress, the wonderful part about SA is that everyone knows how much we LOVE TO BRAAI… so most resorts have Braai facilities on the property or even at the units for those family braais, guy trip braais or couple’s braais for the ultimate braai lovers on travel.

Garden Route Oysters and Seafood

The Garden Route in South Africa has an impressively scenic stretch of coastline that offers a unique culinary experience where seafood and Oysters feature a lot! The town of Knysna, in particular, is renowned for its delicious oysters and seafood. Did you know that the Knysna oyster is a prized delicacy that has gained worldwide recognition for its exquisite taste and quality? The surrounding waters are also abundant with a variety of seafood, including prawns, mussels and fish. This makes Knysna and the Garden Route a food-lovers paradise for seafood enthusiasts.

The Knysna River Club is a beautiful tranquil self-catering accommodation option for those looking to dive into comfort and luxury. It’s located in the heart of the Garden Route on the edge of Knysna Lagoon and features a private jetty and a pool surrounded by the most peaceful landscape where lush trees meet serene water. All chalets are equipped with a fully-functional kitchen and a private balcony to enjoy the views. The on-site restaurant, located in the original manor house, serves a variety of delicious seafood, meats and vegetables, while the bar is perfect for refreshing drinks in the evenings. When you’re not ‘feeding’ your way through the Garden Route, relax on sun beds by the pool, enjoy the sauna and Jacuzzi, or visit the nearby golf course, Knysna Train Station and Kruisfontein Forest.

When you’re ready for it, the oyster-tasting experiences nearby will blow your mind. Try these oyster and seafood hot spots to tickle your oyster fancy:

Mossel Bay is also a town along the Garden Route that is famous for its seafood. Located on the Indian Ocean, Mossel Bay boasts a thriving fishing industry that provides an abundance of fresh seafood. Visitors can indulge in a variety of seafood dishes, including fish and chips, calamari, prawns and crayfish. The town also hosts an annual Mussel Festival that celebrates the area’s rich maritime heritage and showcases its delectable molluscs.

The food is fresh and fabulous, too! Here’s a few seafood hot spots to visit nearby when you’re staying here:

Cape Cuisine

Cape Town is a vibrant city that shows off with its rich culinary offerings. It’s like a scrumptious scene from your favourite foodie movie inviting you into an eclectic mix of international and local cuisines that promises to delight. It’s filled with an abundance of fresh seafood dishes that are prepared using a variety of local spices and herbs. The Cape is also famed for its unique blend of European, Asian and African flavours, resulting in delicious fusion dishes. We all know that the Mother City (and surrounds) is famous for its wine culture where travellers can indulge in wine tastings at some of the city’s top vineyards and wineries. The locale is also home to a number of fantastic restaurants, from casual street food vendors to Michelin-starred establishments, providing a diverse range of dining experiences that are sure to satisfy any foodie’s appetite including artisanal offerings.

First, a place to make your home-away-from-home so that you can fully explore all the city’s top flavours: Riviera Suites on Sea Point’s Millionaire’s Mile is the ideal cuisine holiday headquarters. Why? It has luxurious and comfy rooms, in a prime location offering an indoor swimming pool and wellness spa plus the Jooma Coffee Shop onsite. Catch up with your crew or make new friends enjoying the best coffee, sweet treats and light foods. Plus, the V&A Waterfront nearby opens up the possibilities for even more foodie-flavoured fun.

Looking for something different for your palate in this area? There are tons of stellar restaurants nearby to this resort that take pride in offering the unique side of cuisine, and some we dare say, call these offerings ‘artisanal’ in nature due to their use of local produce and inventive cooking methods and recipes. Try these two out:

  • The Test Kitchen – Nouvelle Latin cuisine with a South African touch with contemporary decor.
  • Grub & Vine – The Grub and Vine is an excellent, central spot for a fine dining experience.

A little gem, only a 3-minute walk from Riviera Suites, is La Bottega Deli which is a little Italian deli, which is a treasure in Cape Town. In Italian, “la bottega” simply means shop, and here you can satisfy the foodie shopper in you: hand-pick from a wide variety of authentic products, from freshly baked goods to cheeses – all promising their own unique goodness.

If you feel like learning a new cuisine that you can go back home and prepare, why not try a Bo-Kaap Cooking Tour and try your hand at creating a Cape Malay cuisine dish loved by the locals and tourists, alike?

What is the Cape without its wine?! This is why wine tasting in the Cape Winelands is a must for anyone who considers wine an important part of a balanced diet. If you’re looking for a wino adventure and want to include some awesome wine experiences from restaurants serving local wine, wine farms and wineries, holiday at Cape Gordonia in Gordon’s Bay, as this resort has multiple wine farms all within 30 minutes.

If you’re travelling for a special anniversary, honeymoon, ready to propose or extra special date night – or even if you’re just looking for an elevated cuisine experience on travel, finding the fine dining restaurants near where you’re staying can be the cherry on top of your superbly-plated exquisitely tasting meal. For example, if you’re going to Cape Gordonia for a wine tour, we found a top dining spot only 3 minutes away from this luxury resort. Café Zest is perfect for those elevated treats for your tongue or a romantic fine dining experience.

Other resorts, like Magalies Park, has Stef’s Table, only 15 minutes away – where you can dine with your favourite people on holiday and enjoy the great service, food, presentation and ambience with the personal touch from the owner making a big difference to the memories you take away with you. Or if you’re splashing out and booking the Penthouse at La Montagne in Ballito, 45 on Eat Street is nearby for families and friends to connect and feel comfortable in a sophisticated yet casual environment.

Kids/Grandkids Meals

If you’re travelling with kids, it can be even more of a challenge to find spots that cater for both your and their preferences. If you have a kid who eats everything: YAY! If you’re dealing with a fussy eater, we don’t need to tell you that ‘the struggle is real’. Luckily, many resorts have onsite restaurants with the foods kids usually enjoy the most mac and cheese or yummy pasta, pizza, toasties and burger and French fries. Here’s a few resorts that you can check into to ensure you’re kid is also happy with their meals.

Midlands Saddle and Trout, Bushman’s Nek and La Montagne all have special Kiddies Menus on offer. PLUS La Montagne offers a Kiddies’ Party option if you’re planning your little one’s birthday celebrations. Other resorts, while they may not have a set Kiddies Menu, their regular menu offers all the options that kids usually crave from pizzas and pastas to toasties and burgers with fries: Club Mykonos Langebaan (Western Cape), Qwantani (Harrismith) & La Côte d’Azur (Margate) to name a few.

Resort Restaurants – Chef’s Choice

While we’re on about the resorts and their kid’s options, let us not forget that the great thing about a resort restaurant is that the menu has been designed by a professional chef with the aim to please your palate (not just the kids). Some resorts even plan special events and menus for special holidays to make it even more exciting for everyone holidaying from Mother’s & Father’s Day, Christmas, and Easter to Halloween, St. Paddy’s Day and more.

They don’t just focus on the needs of one type of traveller or foodie, because resort chefs know all sorts of people in all kinds of different groups travel for various reasons. They keep in mind that the family with the fussy eater, the partner with a craving for an elevated food experience, the solo traveller after a new bucket list adventure may be starving and the fishing buddies just looking for a burger and chips are all in the resort restaurant and looking for a satisfyingly delish meal to chow down.

Here are a few resorts that have onsite restaurants with menus specially designed by Chefs to make sure your next meal on holiday delivers the flavour and satisfaction you’re craving:

Remember, the resort restaurant is not just there to make sure you’re fed on your travels… yes that’s a very big part of why they provide the food – but it’s also a little community of food lovers who have come together to make your trip even more memorable with every munch and crunch. They say food is life, and the resort food and beverage staff from chefs, waitrons, barmen, entertainment staff and everyone in between take pride when you’re there just to taste their creations and make it a part of your holiday experience to remember for LIFE.

In South Africa, every bite is a journey through its rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and diverse flavours. Add popular culture, foodie trends and fine dining to the mix, and you’re in for a foodie adventure to remember. Don’t miss the opportunity to indulge in a tasty journey through this country and discover the magic of its culinary scene.
“People will travel anywhere for good food – it’s crazy.” – Rene Redzepi (Danish Chef)

East to West Cape Escapes

The Eastern and Western Cape of South Africa provides a sweet spot for unique adventures and diverse travel experiences, with something for everyone to enjoy – from scenery, wildlife, wine & food, history & culture, outdoor activities and so much more. It’s a playground for anyone looking for a thrill and can be a haven of relaxation for everyone looking to just chill. Finding the perfect resort to suit your holiday wishlist is the key to setting the right tone for the ultimate Cape escape to remember, this Easter month and beyond.

Whether you’re keen to explore the Sunshine Coast, be a trendy Cape city traveller or meander the Garden Route, you’ve got options! This includes if you’re travelling solo (for business or pleasure), rekindling the lurrve with your partner on a romantic jaunt or bringing your whole crew along too. First, you have to ask yourself: What are you travelling for and what is on your list of MUST-DOs? The Cape regions are so versatile – you don’t have to just pick one thing alone, but it’s nice to set a list of priority experiences you want to have so that you get the most anticipated experiences ticked off first.

What are the best things to do in the Cape?

South Africa is home to some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery, from mountains and beaches to deserts and savannas (all accessible in the Cape) – so it’s yours for the picking. Hike to the top of Table Mountain in Cape Town for stunning views of the city and coastline or visit the vineyards for wine tasting. For the adrenaline junkies, bungee jump off the world’s highest commercial bridge at Bloukrans Bridge (if you dare) or go shark cage diving in Gansbaai.

Cape locals are known for their cool vibrations, and this energy is felt the moment you arrive. So, for those looking for a more relaxing Cape Escape, consider lounging on the sandy beaches of the Western Cape or indulge in a spa treatment in the picturesque town of Franschhoek. Take a scenic drive along the Garden Route, stopping at charming coastal towns like Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, or explore the Cape Winelands and sample some of South Africa’s best wines. The choices are endless. The best way to explore the best of the Cape is to find an awesome holiday headquarters and feel free to roam everything nearby.

BUT Outdoor Activities trump all options! Both regions offer a wide range of outdoor activities including hiking, surfing, swimming, whale watching, cruises, sporty fun and more. Visitors can also explore the many national parks and nature reserves in the area for that wild-side experience. It all depends on YOUR to-do list. So, let’s break it down into what you can prioritize when you’re headed to either Cape region.

What are the best places to stay in the Western Cape?

It’s not just nature that shines here – even the city views are so spectacular, you will savour the many places where nature meets mankind in its landscaped excellence. One such spot overlooking the bay is the Peninsula All-Suite Hotel. Experience the ultimate beach getaway! Just a short stroll from the sand and a 10-minute drive from the trendy Camps Bay, this hotel has it all.

Take a dip in one of the 2 pools, lounge in the lush garden, or sip on a cocktail at the bar. Indulge in delectable cuisine at the alfresco Sunset Restaurant or grab a quick snack at the Sunset Deck. Breakfast in bed? Yes, please! You can even hit the gym or relax in the sauna. And with a free shuttle service to hotspots like V&A Waterfront, City Centre, Table Mountain, Clifton Beach and Camps Bay, you can explore the best of Cape Town.

If you’re looking to escape the city, Knysna is the better choice. And if you’re going the ‘Garden Route’, the Knysna River Club is one of the best places to stay. Find tranquillity in lush natural settings, with log-cabin chalets in magnificent gardens or overlooking the lagoon. It’s the peace you’re searching for in one spot. With inter-leading chalets, a family vacation here offers the best opportunities to keep comfy space between you and your crew and allows for quality connections to happen spontaneously to help make those magical memories, together.

Feeling active? Enjoy a 5km jog to the famous Knysna Heads or walk/cycle to Thesen Islands on the bricked promenade alongside the lagoon. Fishing enthusiast? Throw a line from the jetty into the Knysna lagoon in front of the resort. Or gather the fam and explore the vast lagoon with its many secluded beaches. From this, it’s evident that the Western Cape offers polar opposite experiences depending on where you book your holiday. Now that we’ve outlined the best spots for the city explorer and the peaceful retreat, here’s a few other options for different experiences you can enjoy on your next getaway whether you’re looking for a full-on beach holiday, wino experience, cultural tour or wildlife adventure Cape-side.

What are the best beaches in the Eastern Cape?

The Cape is ALL-COAST! Well… almost! So the selection of beaches from the North Coast of the EASTERN CAPE to the North Coast of the WESTERN CAPE is vast. Secluded beaches, treasured and trendy spots and even the popular main beaches are a treat when you’re looking to enjoy the warm South African weather with some sunshine, sand and surf. Two top Eastern Cape resorts offer beach paradise and beach access bliss that will answer your innermost yearnings to turn into a temporary ‘beach bum’ while on holiday: Brookes Hill Suites and Kowie River Chalets.

Brookes Hill Suites offers the ultimate beach escape. This beachfront accommodation in Gqeberha is just 2km from Pollock Beach and features an outdoor pool, a lush garden, and free Wi-Fi for all your social media updates. Plus, get your grill on with our gas BBQ for only R50 a day! With cycling and fishing nearby, and the Boardwalk and Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium just a short distance away, adventure awaits. But if you’re going to a beach hot spot, make sure you set aside a good few hours each day to simply lie on the shore and take in the beach vibrations from cocktail sundowners, book on the beach, nap in the sand and dips in the warm ocean to invigorate body, mind and soul.

We’ve all seen those #beachlife pics on Instagram where the wooden steps and scanty wooden rails lead from green havens right onto the sand to where the waves crash onto the shore… so if THAT’s the beach holiday experience you’re looking for (to snap those lifetime profile pics and create awesome TikToks with full-on coastal flavour backgrounds) Kowie River Chalets is the beach holiday HQ to book in Port Alfred. It’s such a wonderfully versatile resort for group holidays with 3-bedroom log-cabin chalets on offer – take that couple’s group vacay, family holiday or girls’ getaway. You’ll never have to leave the resort because you can experience a world of adventure right there – from birdwatching to board games, daily entertainment and even treasure hunts for the little ones (and the BEACH, of course) – there’s never a dull moment! But, if you are looking to explore further out and extend your beach vibes nearby, you can go snorkelling, horse riding, diving, bowling, cycling, canoeing, windsurfing, fishing, or show off your best golf swing at the golf course that’s only 3km away.

Plus, the Eastern Cape is known for its delicious seafood, and visitors can sample fresh oysters, crayfish, and other seafood delicacies – this is one of the BEST parts of a Cape escape – indulge in the freshest top-quality seafood on offer.

What are the top wine farms to visit in the Western Cape?

One of the main reasons the Cape is uber popular: it’s Food and WINE! (emphasis on WINE, darling!) There are tons of options to choose from when it comes to wine farms & tours or wino adventures, but Cape Gordonia trumps the lot with a perfect balance between coastal relaxation and tasting some of the best wines in the WORLD. The resort’s luxury apartments in Gordon’s Bay include Wi-Fi, private braai areas, a daily cleaning service, and a childminding service so that you can really relax and enjoy your vacation without having to worry about the kids. There are also (at least) 8 wine farms/estates under 30 minutes from the resort. Here’s a quick list of the wine farm tours you can take while holidaying at Cape Gordonia:

What are the top wildlife reserves in the Cape?

Both Eastern and Western Cape regions are home to a wide variety of wildlife including elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos and many species of antelope. Visiting a nature reserve or wildlife park to see these animals in their natural habitats can be a highlight for all ages. Two top resorts, ideally located hot spots for a coastal Cape getaway with nature reserve and game drive options are: Perna Perna Mossel Bay and Port Owen Marina.

Perna Perna Mossel Bay is one of the very best Mossel Bay resorts, perched on the rocky hillside of this coastal village. It offers a wide range of onsite activities, as well as endless opportunities to explore all the local area has to offer in terms of both ocean wildlife and Big 5 safari tours. Spend a day with the kids at Adventureland, where they’ll enjoy hours of fun and entertainment. When you’re not wildlife or coastal adventuring, the resort has a swimming pool, outdoor fireplace, free WiFi and all comforts you and your loved ones will need.

Port Owen Marina (in Velddrif, on the Cape West Coast) is another magnificent option for a nature Cape escape with a difference. With the gorgeous apartments and chalets situated on the banks of the marina, there are endless opportunities for sailing, boating and fishing. A playground, sporting facilities and an open-air semi-heated pool means the kids will always have something to do. Beat the heat

The heat is on! Feb in South Africa is considered the hottest month of the year… and so keeping cool is a priority. While some people look forward to the warm weather and sunshine, the heat can sometimes be too much to bear. It’s never too late to book that cool-down vacay while the weather is still warm. If you’re looking to escape the heat and cool off, there are plenty of top local destinations and activities to choose from.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing beach vacation or an adventure-filled getaway inland, the best way to beat the heat is by taking advantage of air conditioning, pools, and other cool-down activities. Here’s a few refreshing staycation slay spots that bring the ultra-cool vibes when the weather continues to sizzle.

Air Conditioning and Swimming Pools

Take advantage of the air conditioning! Whether you’re staying in a hotel or resort, making sure the property has air conditioning is the x-factor to staying cooler than cool. La Montagne on the KZN North Coast boasts modern, fully equipped, and air-conditioned apartments – so even if you get too hot at the nearby beach, lazing by the pool, or end up sweaty after a fun activity (like squash, cycling, or fishing) coming back to the air-conditioned unit will be like a dream come true.

Beach is not your vibe? Then, travel inland and stay at the Manyane Resort in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve (close to Sun City). This resort brings bush-vibes with thatched roof chalets that all have air-conditioning (yay!) and a private patio to catch the bush breeze (double yay!). With a children’s playground, walk-in aviary, and centrally situated swimming pool (for those quick dips or long swims), you’re sure to keep cool in more ways than one. There’s also self-drive or guided game drives to get those chilly goosebumps from up-close-and-personal animal encounters.

When it comes to cooling off and relaxing, nothing beats a poolside chill. Here’s two favourite resorts with the best pool experiences: Bushman’s Nek (Drakensberg) and Magalies Park (Hartbeespoort). Both come complete with comfortable lounge chairs, umbrellas, and easy access to your favourite cocktail or cold drink while lounging by the pool. Don’t forget to take advantage of the poolside service for meals and snacks too.

Beach and Braai

‘Life’s a Beach’ because beach vacations offer the perfect opportunity to swim in the ocean, relax on the sand, and take in the beautiful scenery. South Africa has some of the best beaches in the world – from the KZN North Coast to the Western Cape. Among these beach havens, find warm or cool waters, sandy beaches, and plenty of opportunities for swimming, snorkelling and other water sports. Many beach resorts also have large swimming pools and air-conditioned rooms, making it easy to stay cool even on the hottest days.

What about enjoying a beach picnic? Whether it’s only you and boo, just your crew or your whole family too – beach picnics sound simple but are totally fun. Pack a light lunch, finger food or your favourite takeout with some cold drinks, and a big umbrella to enjoy a relaxing afternoon with the people you love the most. The sun, the surf and sand can relax you and provide the ultimate cool factor. What about our favourite past-time? BRAAI! Many beach resorts offer grill and picnic areas for guests to use, allowing you to enjoy a delicious meal while taking in the beautiful ocean views. SORTED!

Hermanus Beach Club ticks all these boxes. It’s a beach home-away-from-home – with 2 and 3-bedroom units AND each unit has their own private brick-built braai. It’s perfect for that family holiday or girls/guys trip you have been itching to go on. Staying close to the beach guarantees an ocean breeze to keep you cool whoever you choose to chill with on vacay.

Want the Braai but not the beach? Then, keep braai-ing while the suns still out for longer when you stay at Kwa Maritane in Pilanesberg. Here, all the units come with an outdoor grill and there’s tons to do on the resort – including tennis, swimming pools (one even features a water slide) and a children’s playground. Sun City is a 10-minute drive away to add to the cool-down fun. At Kwa Maritane, book a 1-bedroom chalet if you’re going with your lover or bestie, or book a 2-bedroom Chalet if you’re taking the family or planning a gals/guys-only trip. There’s also a 2-bedroom Superior Chalet to add that extra bit of luxury to your cool-down getaway.

Water Sports + Selfie Spots

When the weather peaks we all urgently MUST.FIND.WATER… to drink, shower, dip into or splash out! One of the best ways to beat the heat on a beach, lake, dam or riverside vacation is by getting stuck into all the water sports available. From jet skiing and parasailing to windsurfing and boat/barge cruises, there are plenty of ways to cool off and have fun. Think outside the box: you can even find a boat rental spot (at some places), allowing you to explore the coastline and discover hidden coves, private rock pools, and untouched beaches.

Club Mykonos Langebaan has everything you need to cool down in Grecian style. Apart from the poolside bar and awesome sea views, it has a private jetty, a wellness spa and water skiing nearby. But Club Mykonos specifically has tons of scenic lookout points by the harbour, beautiful gardens and beach hot spots – perfect for capturing those Instagram-worthy snaps. You can also try taking a selfie while enjoying water sports such as kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding for a unique angle. Two of the most popular snapshot selfie spots is right on the beach, where the blue water meets the shore or snap a selfie with the Greek-style architecture in the background where you can #GreeceInSA or #EpicShot loading…!

Sodwana Bay Lodge Dive & Fishing Resort on the Elephant Coast is also a hot spot for selfies and water sports. The lush green landscape with easy access to the beach makes it an ideal cooling spot for that extra chill. Try out water skiing, paddle boards, snorkelling or scuba diving. Fun Trips for Couples

“Love is the food of life, travel is dessert.”  – Amanda Jane Sturges

Romance takes a bit of planning – it doesn’t happen by magic – it involves a bit of thought and prep. Yes, there are those people to whom romance comes naturally, and then there are others who need some help to make that alone time with bae pop like the cork on New Year’s Eve at midnight. But nothing says I love you with fierce intensity and passion like a romantic holiday away, just the two of you. It’s also just in time for you to be the early-“love”-bird and book that Valentine’s Getaway.

Romance is flowers, chocolate, surprises (the good kind), thoughtful gifts, date night, late-night Netflix & Chill, special cuddles and kisses, etc…. but if you REALLY wanna amp up the flirtation, plan a midweek, weekend, or week-long vacay, especially for that romantic slay. Sit down with bae or plan it as a surprise! It can be the most satisfying chapter in your personal love story! We’ve got a few ideas on what to consider when you’re drawing the blueprint for your sizzling getaway.

What is ROMANCE?

We googled it! And this is what came up:
Romance

noun

·         a feeling of excitement and mystery associated with love e.g. “I had a thirst for romance”

verb

·         try to gain the love of or court.

So, using this definition, we now have a recipe for what needs to go into planning your sexy getaway. All you need is a bit of excitement, mystery, love and to try! Court each other (even if you’re dating or married for yonks). Remove yourself from the everyday rat race, plan some fun activities mysteriously, make every moment you can EXCITING, and keep trying to win each other’s affection – over and over again. It sounds like courting each other is gonna be some hard work, but it really isn’t – especially when it’s for the person you love most in this world. Sometimes even the smallest ‘tries’ can have the biggest impact on your lover’s heart. But, if you wanna go BIG – don’t go home! Go on a steamy holiday together and plan it now.

Best Romantic Getaways

Like the director of your own romantic film, you have to consider location location location! Where are you going to? Do you remember the last time you took bae away and got their heart beating like a drum around a beach bonfire? Where was that place? What about a second honeymoon road-tripping across SA? Which place has your better half mentioned they want to visit? Have they mentioned a particular place over and over again? Take notes!

Sometimes even going back to the same resorts you’ve visited in the past can rekindle what you last experienced there. Especially when you’re living in the city and need a break from the everyday hustle, going to the countryside can be the shift you both need.

When you book in at Bushman’s Nek, you can get away from the norm and escape to the country. What about the mystery, excitement, and courting? That’s all coming – don’t you worry. At Bushman’s Nek you can plan your romance with some comfy country luxury in the mix. Horse ride in the mountains or take a hand-in-hand hike through the nearby trails. Think cowboy (cowgirl) adventures, boots with fur, and scenery to inspire your love story even more. If you’re not the cowboy ranch-kinda couple, you can still check in and chill! Put up the DO NOT DISTURB sign and create a safe space for you both to connect in country comfort. There’s even a La Vita Wellness Spa to get you both pampered, together.

Couple’s Getaways

The countryside is not the only couple’s escape option. Exciting bae can come in a different way. The Peninsula All-Suite Hotel in Cape Town is perfectly situated and stocked with everything a trendy couple may need. This resort has sea-facing rooms with the ocean sounds on one side and the romantic Table Mountain on the other. It boasts comfortable rooms with stunning facilities and easy access to the city.

As a modern couple, we know you might be searching for the next new adventure to share with your lover. Sometimes when these experiences are risky, daring, or scary – they can bring you both closer together as you learn more about each other’s fears, hopes, and passions. Like the Bachelor or Bachelorette, you can create a date card and take bae for a bungee jump or shark cage dive and see how they handle the pressure on the way down or in the deep blue sea. Or just chill in the room and order room service plus dessert. *wink wink* It’s your romantic vacay, so you can do a little, a lot – or a bit of both. You choose!

The Peninsula All-Suite Hotel provides everything a cosmopolitan couple may need: free WiFi throughout, pools, a garden, and a bar. Breakfast can be served in the rooms, and 24-hour room service is available for those extra relaxing days. The hotel also has a gym and a sauna – so, no need to break your gym routine if it’s something you’re passionate about. Or, for a change, gym together and spend your workout recovery time in the sauna. There are also nearby bookshops, museums, historical sites, various other popular coffee shops, bistros, pubs, bars, and restaurants. Add Table Mountain Cable Car or hike, Robben Island & Penguin tours, wine tours, and a thriving nightlife to the mix, and it’s clear that there are tons of opportunities to excite and stir up the passion between you and your significant other.

Couple’s Goals

Whether you’re married for decades, newly dating, or just made it past the 7-year itch – we all have couple’s goals, right? There’s a list of things you and boo have that you want to experience together and turn into a milestone moment. Couple’s goals can be endless… from daring couple safaris, beating your golf-loving-lover at their own game, surviving that epic death-defying super high water slide together, bungee jumping together, tandem paragliding, and more! When you’re on holiday, it’s one of the best times to try to tick those couple’s goals off.

At Magalies Park, the 2-sleeper hotel rooms are super cute, and everything is perfectly furnished for two. It even has a giant bathtub (big enough for two) close enough to the bed to take a dip together and then fall into sweet slumber together, at the end of the day. A jacuzzi on the private balcony with built-in braai and sun loungers helps those chill (and chow) sessions. They have specially designed these spaces for twosomes who need privacy to connect, chat & catch up on what really matters.

Get in a fun or competitive game of golf on the surrounding greens, unwind together during a couple’s spa treatment, and enjoy water sports on the Hartbeespoort Dam. Or take a walk with the elephants at the nearby Elephant Sanctuary. Now, that’s what we call a majestic milestone for your next #CouplesGoals social post.

Couple’s Retreat

Sometimes taking a deep breath in nature on a beach paradise can align you and your partner to be even stronger than ever. Remember, relationships are not just about getting through the hard times together, supporting one another, and being a shoulder to lean on. It’s also about the grand ‘happy place’ moments you share together. Snap those couple’s selfies and enjoy the summer together watching the sunset (or sunrise), romantic walks on the beach, horse riding on the shore, and more.

You guys can experience untamed wild passion on the famous Garden Route! Wilderness Dunes is perfect for both those lazy cuddle days AND those amped-up lovey-dovey days filled with new adventures. This beachfront resort, situated on the dunes of Wilderness near George, is the perfect backdrop for your travel love story to unfold. There’s golf, tennis, swimming, water sports, horse-riding, and cycling plus long stretches of unpolluted beach on which to stroll, stretch out, and unwind. The 2-bed studio is the perfect size for two – kitted with a fireplace for those special fireside snuggles.

Remember, don’t just think about where you’re going that may be romantic – think about all the things you’re going to do there together that make the connecting, romance, and passion one of the most memorable couple’s trips EVER! Book, pack, go, and check in – take the time to focus on nothing but each other. Make the New Year about love and connecting – and the next romantic getaway you book can be the game changer to your happily ever after in your ultimate love story

Live together, love together, travel together!

Happy New Year!
