Spring into A Heritage Day Experience

“Nothing ever seems impossible in spring, you know” – L.M Montgomery.

Possibilities are everywhere, especially when Spring vibes meet Heritage Month celebrations! Flowers, freshness, and festivity reign. Technically, Spring in the Southern Hemisphere only starts on the 23rd of September – which is perfect timing for that Heritage Day Experience.

What does Heritage Day actually involve, though? From dressing in our most iconic traditional clothing to gathering and sharing our culture’s unique food and music, there are no set rules for how we choose to celebrate. Many of us unite in the celebration of Braai Day (also on the 24th of Sept) to celebrate a custom we all share: Tjops (and Dops!) Instead of staying home and sticking close to your own braai this year, we think a Heritage Day Experience can create a blooming effect in both body and mind!

Whether it’s just you, you and bae, or the whole family, discovering our country’s rich history by visiting one of the many South African heritage sites can cause some serious soul blossoming.

Have you got that Heritage Day Spring Swag?

With the sun stronger on your skin and the skies a brighter blue, it makes springing into action a breeze. South Africa is sprinkled with heritage sites across the country, and warming up your spirits with a spring trip can mean taking a moment to admire not just the lush scenery but also our rich history which is a big part of our culture.

Best Day Trip Destinations

Raise the temperature even more by grabbing your partner and taking an unexpected road trip. Create a stir with some spring swagger by piling the family (or your besties) in the car for an impromptu adventure. Whoever you choose to travel with, let’s all agree: Day trips rock! And making the destination a heritage site can add that extra magic to the day! We suggest soul-stirring places like the Nelson Mandela Capture Site (in Howick) or the Cradle of Mankind (in Gauteng.)

The Cradle of Humankind was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.

Traveller, Aaron Spray says it “…showcases the history of humans in a way that nowhere else in the world does.

Now, that’s goosebump-worthy! This heritage hotspot is around 50 Kilometres (or 31 Miles) Northwest of Johannesburg. If you don’t live in and around Jozi, book in at Magalies Park Resort for the weekend, and plan a day trip to explore this fascinating spot that’s like no other IN THE WORLD!

In 1962, on August 5th, after being on the run for over a year, Nelson Mandela was captured by Apartheid police just outside Howick, Kwa Zulu Natal. The spot where he was taken into custody is now officially known as the Nelson Mandela Capture Site, which includes a Visitors’ Centre and a world-renowned sculpture. The sculpture is an iconic collection of columns, and when viewed 35 metres away, it magically reveals Madiba’s face in profile. It’s truly some good ol’ Madiba Magic! Seeing it in pictures online doesn’t do this sculpture justice. It’s something you can only experience standing in that very spot. This is why the Capture Site is one of our top picks for your Heritage Day Trip Experience. Make it a day trip or a special stop on the way when you book in for the weekend at Whispering Waters, where added fun activities like adventure golf, bird watching, fishing, canoeing and hiking can fill up your time.

Hike or Ferry on holiday

Spring is warm-up season. The sparks of a promising summer have been lit. Wildflowers begin to emerge, brushing the landscape with magnificent colours, like a work of art. Now, all that’s left is to put yourself into that picture.

Cape Town is the perfect place to call your HQ for your Heritage Day Holiday Experience, with many official and non-official historical heritage sites on offer. So, it can be as intense or low-key as you want it to be. The City of Cape Town boasts two of the most iconic World Heritage Sites: Table Mountain and Robben Island

Whether you choose to take the cable car or hike up, the view from the top of Table Mountain will have you feeling on top of the world. A hike means even more contact with the thrilling wildlife which keeps animal lovers and the kids excited – from dassies, porcupines and mongooses to snakes, tortoises and a rare amphibian called the Table Mountain Ghost Frog. We’ve even heard there’s a possibility of raptor sightings! Don’t worry, it’s not the Jurassic World, velociraptor-type!  We’re talking about jackal buzzards, booted eagles, African harrier-hawks, peregrine falcons and rock kestrels. Now that’s what we call a bird’s-eye view!

Robben Island is famous as the place where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years. The island represents the triumph of democracy and freedom over oppression, symbolizing the resilience of humanity over hardship and adversity. Visiting this heritage site promises profound insight, understanding and appreciation for how far we have come.

So, after a trek up Table Mountain or a long day exploring Robben Island, you’ll have legit reason to book that relaxing and rejuvenating spa session. Check out these holiday spots to call home at either the Mount Sierra or Riviera Suites. Both boast our famous La Vita Wellness Spa.

Holiday with a difference

A lesser-known but stunning heritage site, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park in the North of KZN, can bring you the Heritage Day experience with a difference. With its rich culture, animal life, and adventure, visiting thisWetland Park can be both relaxing and fulfilling. Let your hair down or splash out! After all, it is KZN: the warmest place to be in the entire country!!! The park is a huge expanse of protected land with its central hub the vast Lake St. Lucia, which is home to large numbers of hippos, crocodiles, pelicans and flamingos. Our Lake View Cabanas and La Rochelle resorts are just 5 minutes away from the Wetland Park.

Convenience, comfort, and the very best of culture! For the adventurous ones, there are horse-riding, kayaking, and scuba diving activities to indulge in. For those who want a calmer Heritage Day experience, we got you! You can pick from game drives, guided walks, and turtle tours. And with Spring in the air, the warmer weather insists that you make a pitstop at the beach.

The great thing is that your Heritage Experience is not limited to ONLY Heritage Month. It’s Springtime, so springboard yourself toward what and when best suits you!

“Culture opens the sense of beauty” – Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Wishing you a Beautiful Spring and a Happy Heritage Month!

Celebrating the Wonder Women

August is for the beautiful ladies! While any day makes for a great chance to celebrate the phenomenal women in your life, National Women’s Day on August 9th gives you one more reason to do just that.

Women are the epitome of strength, love, sacrifice and courage. The role of women in today’s world has changed significantly and for the better. Empowering women creates positive impressions and can help society to grow and develop at a faster pace. From professionals, mothers, and partners to sisters, confidantes, housewives or CEOs – women can take on as many or as few roles as they desire, and the key is that it’s their choice.

This Women’s Month, let’s empower, honour, and celebrate the beauty and strength of South African women in our circles. Remember to support businesses owned by women, donate old clothes to girls’ orphanages, advocate for gender equality in your workplace, and celebrate female colleagues, creators, artists, and authors.

Make this month memorable – whether that means attending Women’s Day events, booking a special getaway, going to the spa, or simply grabbing coffee with your favourite ladies, the fabulous females deserve to be treated like queens.

Here are a few beautiful places you can go to celebrate Women’s Month. There’s something for the beachside bombshells, the city sisters, dam-sels in this dress and the country girls!

Beachside Bombshells

For a seaside escape and sunkissed skin, head to sunny KZN. Whether you head North and stay at beautiful La Montagne or chill in Durbs and stay at The Palace, the warm Indian Ocean awaits.

Throw on your beach wrap, sunnies and sandals and soak up the sun while taking golden hour selfies. Book a relaxing spa day and indulge in luxurious treatments that’ll soothe your mind, body, and soul. Skip the cooking and enjoy delicious meals at the onsite restaurant and sundowners with magnificent ocean views.

City Sisters

Explore the Mother City and stay in Gardens at Mount Sierra or Riviera Suites in Sea Point – both prime areas, and either resort provides the perfect base from which to enjoy nearby hotspots.

Spend your days mooching around vibey streets, discovering quaint cafés, exquisite galleries, and stunning photo spots with the gorgeous mountain as a backdrop. Stop at Jooma or Mount Sierra Coffee Shop for a refreshing pressed juice or your caffeine fix. Don’t forget to block out at least one full day at La Vita Spa to get your glam on!

Damsels in De-Stress

Head to Harties Dam and stay at Magalies Park for the best bush break complete with the facilities of your dreams. From heated swimming pools, volleyball and private jetty to tennis courts, casino and poolside bar, your getaway will be simply unforgettable.

After receiving incredible full body massages, enjoy bubbly in the Jacuzzi to relax your mind and muscles. Hop in the steam room and sauna for the ultimate indulgence and book a hair appointment to look and feel your best. Then put on your best dress and go for dinner and drinks at the restaurant onsite!

Country Girls

A calm and tranquil country retreat! Take in the beauty of the Berg at Bushman’s Nek or marvel at the Midlands at Midlands Saddle and Trout – you’ll leave your heart in the countryside!

Go horseback riding around the resort, picnic in the mountains, be amazed at the surreal sunsets and enjoy dinner at drinks at a cosy restaurant. Take time out for yourself with a hot stone massage and mani-pedi at La Vita Spa. Fall in love with the peace and quiet that nature offers.

To all the wonderful women out there: Shine on and continue breaking barriers and making valuable contributions to the world. You are bold, beautiful, compassionate, and caring. Keep inspiring the people around you!

Wishing you a very happy Women’s Month!

Feminism isn’t about making women strong. Women are already strong. It’s about changing the way the world perceives that strength.

“Do what you can, with what you have, wherever you are.”

This month, we as South Africans and people around the world will celebrate the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela. He was crucial in liberating our country and establishing democracy. Madiba was also known for his love, support, and selflessness.

International Mandela Day takes place every year on 18th July (Madiba’s birthday).  But what is the significance of it? For some, it means dedicating 67 minutes to a selfless deed, for others it’s just a day off from work! However, we can ALL heed the call to do something and recognise our individual power to make a difference and change the world.

Make this Mandela Day memorable by exploring the incredible historical sites all around South Africa. From the exquisite architectural design of the Capture Site to the famous Robben Island to Mandela’s Cave Hideout and City Hall where he gave his first speech after his release, these sites are an integral part of South Africa’s story.

Whether you plan a long weekend away or stay in your province, there are parts of our country’s history all around us just waiting for you to discover. Go out, find them, and give them the recognition and appreciation they deserve! Plus, take the kids along for the historical trip down memory lane.

Nelson Mandela Capture Site – Howick

This is the spot where Madiba was captured by Apartheid police on 5 August 1962 after being on the run for over a year.

They seem like a random collection of columns until you get to the footpath 35 meters away when Madiba’s profile facing West magically appears – against the backdrop of the rolling hills and valleys of the KwaZulu Natal Midlands. As you get even closer to the monument, the columns once again dissolve into a forest.

On your way from Durban to stay at Midlands Saddle and Trout or Whispering Waters, stop at the Capture Site in Howick. Stand in awe as you reflect on the events that unfolded in this very spot, 60 years ago.

Robben Island & Robben Island Museum – Cape Town

“A symbol of the triumph of the human spirit over adversity.”

Explore the island on which Mandela was held captive for 18 years.

Take a scenic boat ride across the Atlantic Ocean and go on a guided tour of Robben Island. Walk in the footsteps of those who came before us, liberating South Africa.

Stay at Riviera Suites, just a 15-minute drive from the Robben Island Museum and the ferry which will take you to the Island. Plus, grab a coffee from the resort’s Jooma Coffee Shop and pop in at V&A Waterfront for some shopping. While you’re there, don’t forget to check out Nelson Mandela’s statue standing alongside Desmond Tutu, FW de Klerk, and Albert Luthuli.

City Hall – Cape Town

Nelson Mandela stood on the balcony here and gave his first speech, hours after his release, to thousands of people. A life-size statue of him overlooks the Grand Parade from the balcony of the City Hall, standing in the same place where he spoke from.

Enjoy the picturesque Table Mountain backdrop as you explore City Hall in the heart of the Mother City.

Be sure to stay nearby at Mount Sierra or Hastings Hall, both just 10 minutes from Cape Town City Hall. Grab a light pastry and a cup of tea at Mount Sierra Coffee Shop or discover lovely street cafés along the way.

Mandela Cave Hideout – Coffee Bay

This is a lesser-known, albeit historical spot in Coffee Bay. If you’re into discovering hidden gems, this is for you.

This glorious landmark, named after the late, great Mandela, is nestled in lush greenery on the shores of the beautiful Indian Ocean.

If you’re staying at Hole in the Wall, take a 30-minute scenic drive along the coast to the Mandela Cave Hideout. Hike down to the cave and explore an awesome part of our history.

These sites are just a drop in the ocean, as there are so many other magnificent places to discover that make up a part of South Africa’s history. We are blessed to live in a country with a rich history and incredible landmarks to visit to this day.

As Mandela himself said, “When we read, we are able to travel to many places, meet many people and understand the world. We can also learn how to deal with problems we are having by learning from the lessons of the past.”

Have a happy Madiba month, everyone!

June is for chillin’ and grillin’

“A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.” – Billy Graham

They are a daughter’s first love and a son’s first hero, they are the greatest storytellers and the biggest jokesters, they are our dads! Dads are often the closest thing we have to real-life superheroes. They are strong and brave – total legends. They’re also some of the best teachers, coaches, and mentors we’ll ever have, full of wisdom and always there to cheer us on.

As June rolls around, keep in mind what important date it brings: Father’s Day on the 19th! It’s never too early to start planning how to celebrate your dad. You can make him a special Father’s Day brunch or breakfast with his favourite dishes, or even surprise him with a meat delivery so he can fire up the grill for his favourite braaivleis.

Use this month to honour the fathers in your lives, whether that be your dad, stepdad, granddad, uncle, neighbour, or any male figure that takes on a fatherly role for you. There’s nothing like the advice, love, and support from them. They’re always willing to lend a helping hand or offer an ill-timed dad joke that we can’t help but laugh at!

It’s important to treasure quality time with dad and celebrate the many roles he plays in your life. From braai master and designated driver to self-qualified mechanic and king of falling asleep on the couch – you got to love your ol’ man!

Make awesome memories with your dad this month. Enjoy fun-filled winter activities at our resorts. Go golfing on the greens, head to the dam for some fishing or cycle the road less travelled. Plus, enjoy some bonding time over the braai and remember to laugh extra loudly at his special dad jokes! Check out the resorts that will be hosting terrific Father’s Day events with dad’s favourite meals.

Make this month one he’ll always remember!

Tee-rific Golf

Bond with dad over a fun game of golf out on the Magalies Park golf course. Admire the stunning backdrop of the Magaliesberg while you and the old man enjoy the 18-hole course. Or visit one of our many resorts to challenge dad to a game of adventure golf. There are awesome mini golf courses at the below resorts:

Reel ‘em in

Is there a more “dad activity” than fishing? Having dad teach us about fishing was awesome. He baited our first hook, tied an encyclopaedia’s worth of knots and taught us that fishing often transcends catching fish. Head to the dams at the below resorts for the ultimate fishing excursion with your pops!

•    Qwantani Berg and Bush Resort
•    Midlands Saddle & Trout
•    Whispering Waters
•    Hole in the Wall
•    Magalies Park
•    Bushman’s Nek Berg & Trout

Fire up the grill

They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, so why not celebrate Father’s Day with a feast fit for a king? Dads love their dop and chop, so treat the man to braaivleis and beers on his special day.

Don’t let the cold weather stop you from spending some quality time with dad. Or if you prefer to skip the cooking, the below resorts are hosting spectacular Father’s Day events.

Book early to secure your spot!

Pedal it out

Your dad was most likely the one to teach you to ride your first bike. Recapture some of those precious moments with a bike ride down North Beach promenade or, if you’re feeling adventurous, head to Magalies Park to face the mountain bike trails. Many of our resorts offer bike hire or cycling trails that provide for the perfect Father’s Day activity.

Dads are the greatest gifts who give the best hugs and can fix just about anything. Spoil the father figures in your life with a memorable holiday and activities he’ll love! Whether you choose a golf getaway or a fishing trip, whether your dad is an adventurous risk-taker or a laid-back griller, we’re sure that his Father’s Day will be filled with love and superb experiences!

To travel is to be free!

“There is something in us that refuses to be regarded as less than human. We are created for freedom.” – Desmond Tutu

April arrives with fun and festivities – Easter, family time, and Freedom Day.  The month has so many holidays that it’s the best time for a gorgeous getaway! Whether you’re planning a solo trip, family holiday or a romantic rendezvous, travel will never disappoint.

Travelling to new places is the best way to bond with others and to reconnect with yourself. It gives you the chance to get out of your comfort zone. You’ll try new things and experience new adventures. You’ll meet new people and see new sights. Being in a new place opens your mind and your soul and makes life worth living. Ultimately, travel is freedom.

Freedom to explore, to indulge, to play, to roam, to relax, and to live life to the fullest.

Travel isn’t just sipping cocktails poolside (although that’s a part of it!). It’s also about getting to know yourself on another level, realizing what activities or foods you’re willing to try. It’s about pushing yourself to new heights and doing it with your favourite people – the ones who make you feel alive and free.

It’s important to acknowledge that our freedom was made possible by the late and great, Nelson Mandela, and many freedom fighters. This month we commemorate Freedom Day. April 27th was an iconic day in our South African history. Our first democratic elections took place, and we had the freedom to vote. With that, also came the freedom of choice, which changed our lives and our country.

As Madiba himself said, “for to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”

Let’s heed Madiba’s call and live life with respect for ourselves and our fellow South Africans. Embrace your freedom and your family this month. Book a trip and be young, wild, and free.

Bush, Berg, or Beach? Take your pick!

Can you believe it’s already the third month of the year?! You’ve worked so hard for the last two months, you deserve to treat yourself to a weekend away – plan your next super-relaxing vacay now!  Too often we wait for holidays, the festive season, or a special occasion to travel. Author, Germany Kent wrote, “happiness is achieved when you stop waiting for life to begin and start making the most of the moment you are in.” If the past two years have taught us anything, it’s that life’s too short; you have yourself, your health and your family – pack your bags and get going already.

The seasons are changing and so are you. Autumn leaves Summer behind, just like we leave a version of ourselves behind. Don’t be afraid to reinvent yourself and reimagine the life you’ve always wanted. Change is good, it’s liberating! We should all strive to better ourselves and believe that we can achieve anything we set our minds to – and that’s facts. It’s a new month, a new season, and a great opportunity to do something NEW, something BOLD, something BEAUTIFUL!

We all set goals for the year, and often we aim to travel more, spend extra time with loved ones, and prioritize self-care. But with busy schedules, it can be difficult to achieve a good balance between work and play. Life gets in the way. But, as the new season approaches, we encourage you to book the holiday you’ve been yearning for, host a family get-together and go for that spa retreat – you deserve it.

Why wait for December? March brings the end of Summer, but not really. The days are sunny enough to hit the beach or go hiking, but the Autumn breeze keeps you cool and comfortable. Simply perfect. Plus, you won’t start sweating at 10 in the morning! The temperature stays around 22 to 27 degrees throughout the day and the sun still sets late – perfect for sundowners as you round off your day’s adventures.

If you’re desperate to disconnect your phone and reconnect with your people, we feel you! Head to Magalies Park for a mountain of fun and leisure. Or opt for Qwantani Berg and Bush Resort for the best of both worlds. Left your heart in the Midlands? Bushman’s Nek and Midlands Saddle and Trout promise a peaceful countryside haven. If you’re ready to carpe diem, then head to one of our seaside resorts for blue skies and blue waters.

No passport? No problem! Wriggle your toes in sun-soaked sand or experience the African bush without crossing the border. With so much diversity right here in South Africa, your next adventure could just be a two- or three-hour drive away.

So, there’s only one question left: bush, berg, or beach?

Bush – Into the wild

Magalies Park

Combining the best of nature with the best of leisure, Magalies Park offers a peaceful retreat situated alongside the tranquil Magalies River and Magaliesberg Mountains. Relish delicious continental cuisine at Pica Pau before heading for a round of golf or a scenic hike and end off the day cozied up around the boma.

Qwantani Berg and Bush Resort

Escape the hustle and bustle of daily life at this Harrismith accommodation and enjoy privacy, entertainment, and high-end hospitality. You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to family activities. Canoe down the breath-taking Sterkfontein dam where you can also spend the day teaching the kids to fish and catch a “drive-in style” movie as the sunsets.

Berg – Countryside living

Bushman’s Nek

Situated in the picturesque foothills of Southern Drakensberg, Bushman’s Nek is bound to bring out your adventurous side to this rustic living experience. Revel in the beauty that the Berg has to offer while taking your morning coffee on the pool deck and enjoying a hearty meal at The Bushpot onsite restaurant. Plan an exciting day filled with fly fishing, mountain biking, archery, and tractor rides.

Whispering Waters

If you’re in the mood for the ultimate countryside experience, look no further. Whispering Waters is set on rolling hills and pastures of the Natal Midlands, along the gorgeous Lions River. With fully kitted, spacious accommodation and an endless stream of outdoor activities and nearby attractions, you’ll never want to leave!

Beach – Seas the day

Margate Sands

Unwind by the pool, take a long walk on the beach or indulge yourself with a relaxing treatment at Margate Sands, situated along the warm South Coast. Your luxury home away from home, Margate Sands is the perfect place for your family holiday – braai away, hop in the pool, or challenge someone to a game of table tennis at this relaxing beach resort overlooking the Indian ocean.

The Palace All-Suite

Located on Durban’s Golden Mile, with the beachfront on your doorstep, The Palace All-Suite Hotel offers convenience and comfort for a fantastic fun-filled holiday. The magnificent sea views are a feast for the eyes and the soul. Let the ocean breeze calm your mind and take all your troubles away. Grab the kids for some Vitamin D and a salty seaside escape.

La Montagne

Enjoy stunning sea views and romantic sunsets at La Montagne, situated on Ballito Beachfront with a poolside restaurant, bar, and café. Hire bikes and cycle down the promenade or enjoy a swim in the crashing waves to cool off. Lounge around with a cocktail in hand at the poolside bar (make sure to take a selfie for the ‘Gram.) Hit the squash courts to keep active and pamper yourself at the wellness-spa. You deserve it all!

Breakers

Just a 2-minute walk from Hawaan beach, Breakers offers luxury and privacy with accommodation and facilities that will instantly offer a sense of calm and relaxation. While the kids have fun in the playground, you can utilize the fitness center or book a massage that will leave you feeling brand new. Head to Umhlanga Village for buzzing nightlife and top-end restaurants to close off your night on a high. The vibes are unmatched!

There aren’t many countries that can boast bush, berg, and beach. South Africa is truly beautiful, and she holds so many hidden gems and sights to see.

We hope you’ll March into this month with a zest for life and a weekend away marked on your calendars!

Love,
Team Flexi

A little bit of love goes a long, long way…

French novelist, memoirist, journalist, and women’s rights champion, George Sand, wrote that there is only one true happiness in this life – to love and be loved. And while it’s easy to become jaded at the concept of Valentine’s Day, we’re a bunch of suckers for love! No, seriously… We LOVE love – and we love getting to find new ways to spoil the special person who lights up our world.

Just pause for a second. Who was the person that popped into your mind a moment ago? Who is it that matters most to you – and why do they matter? Is it because they’re kind and also drop-dead-gorgeous (hot damn!), or is it because they’re the smartest, funniest person you know? Does this person feel like your other half, like whatever our souls are made of, yours and theirs are the same? Are they warm like sunlight, filling your life with joy, growth, and good things? Do they make you feel like you can do the impossible and conquer the world, inspiring you to be better and believing in you with unwavering support?

Have you found this person yet? If you have, don’t let go. Grand, epic loves are rare and when you find your sundered half, the person you didn’t know you needed, the one who makes your worst day feel like the best day of your life with just one smile, never stop showing them just how much you love them – and our recommendation is to do it with travel!

We also believe that the month of love is about more than just romantic love, which is why we want you to start thinking about how you’re going to share the love with us and your tribe in 2022. Plan your year in advance; give the gift of travel to somebody for your anniversary, their birthday, Valentine’s Day, or any other romantic, friendly, or family-filled occasion.

Plus, ladies, think about including a trip to one of our 22 lavish La Vita Spas around the country with your girls for some perfect pampering! And gents, everyone needs to eat, so why not start your own beer & bacon breakfast tradition with your mates, maybe adding some golf or fishing after to the mix to keep things rugged and manly on your getaway. You deserve a chance to chill out and bond with your gals and bros.

So, in this month of love, we want to focus on love in all its beautiful, different forms. Forget the pink and white streamers, red hearts, and (admittedly adorable) stuffed teddies. Instead, this year, focus on the true meaning of the holiday – a chance to celebrate love in all its wondrous variations. The world needs more love, and you have the opportunity to start putting the kind of goodness you want to feel out there.

Whether you’re truly, madly, deeply in love and want to escape for an intimate weekend getaway, or you need something to reignite your spark, make the time to reconnect with your partner. It could be the ultimate family vacay, a girls-only holiday, or a wild boys’ weekend. Forget the flowers and chocolates; celebrate your love by exploring somewhere new with your favourite people.

Happy 2022

2022 is all about twos for us: twice the fun, twice the love, and twice the number of vacays as we head back out into the world.

The last two years have been difficult: we’ve discovered new variants, adjusted to working from home, and found ways to exist within the new normal. But the world is finally opening up again, and it’s time to take advantage of all the wonders that South Africa has to offer. We have a clean slate and a fresh start, so let’s start getting ready to make your 2022 one for the ages.

January | back to school

When the kids are away, the parents can play! But, sometimes the holiday season can leave you needing a holiday… And this is the perfect time to treat you and your partner to an intimate, peaceful escape while the kids are focused on school again. So, reconnect, reignite your romance, and find some time just to have fun again – you deserve it! Plus, by avoiding the Christmas rush, you’ll be safer and have a quieter time too.

January is also the annual Drak Challenge canoe marathon – organizers have vowed that the event will take place in 2022, with several contingency plans in place, after it was canceled last year due to the second wave.

If you feel like living it up a little, make plans to attend what’s known as Africa’s richest race day, The Sun Met at Kenilworth in Cape Town. With a stellar entertainment line-up and out-of-this-world fashion, rub shoulders with local and international celebs while you soak up the glitz and glam.

February | the month of love

Love is in the air! So spoil your special someone with a blissful, fairytale-perfect getaway, complete with decadent dining, perfect spa pampering, and plenty of romance – think horse rides through the countryside, a picnic in the middle of nowhere, or even an evening in with room service, candlelight, and a dip in the Jacuzzi.

Do you and bae like to get physical? The annual Midmar Mile takes place on Valentine’s Weekend! The event draws competitors from across the world and was recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s largest open water swimming event in 2009.

March | crisp autumn vacays

As much as we love Summer, the sweltering heat can leave us wishing for the cool autumnal breeze. So brace yourselves for gentle breezes, the crunch of crisp leaves underfoot, and stunning red, gold, and brown foliage.

Ready to get your pride on? The Cape Town Pride Festival takes place from the end of February right through to the first week of March to celebrate the beauty of the LGBTQIA+ community.

The Mother City is definitely the place to be in the month of March – the Cape Town Cycle Tour and Cape Town International Jazz Festival also takes place this month. After being postponed in 2021, Africa’s largest jazz fest is sure to be especially thrilling this year. And if you feel like doing some good, for the past 44 years, the Cape Town Cycle Tour, presented by Pick n Pay, has contributed millions of rands to social upliftment and cycling development.

April | exhilarating Easter escapes

Easter is great for two reasons – ALL THE CHOCOLATE and fantastic festivals!

Head out into nature this Easter and make the great outdoors the canvas for your Easter egg hunt. Then, treat the kids to a break after the busyness of the first term and take advantage of the weather for a great family holiday.

Splashy, SA’s longest-running music festival, is free of bias and judgment and is one of the friendliest festivals around, celebrating rock and folk music, people, life, and love. Dozens of the hottest international and local acts have been performed at the fest, from Wheatus and Bowling for Soup to Ladysmith Black Mambazo and The Parlotones.

Cape Town’s most prestigious cycle race, the “globally iconic” Two Oceans Ultra Marathon, will take place on 16 and 17 April after a two-year hiatus resulting from Covid-19 lockdown regulations. The 56 km route runs along the panoramic vista of Chapman’s peak and attracts racers from over 114 countries across the world.

Cape Town also hosts Die Burger’s Suidoosterfees, a festival that celebrates modern art, culture, and heritage. Also, in April? The Transkei Trek, with steep climbs and thrilling descents, this MTB race is an exciting journey around Coffee Bay and the Investec Great Kei Trek and SA Bike Fest in Port Edward.

May | marvels of motherhood

May is for mothers. Spoil mum with a getaway to show her how grateful you are for her. Picture a weekend of spa treatments, bubbly, and plenty of rest and relaxation. Breathe in the fresh air from some of the most gorgeous spots in SA, on the beach, in the bush, or at the Berg.

If you’re serious about meeting your #fitnessgoals in 2022, why not participate in Ultra-Trail Drakensberg or the Giant’s Cup Trail Run. UTD is a trail running festival in the Southern region of the Maloti Drakensberg World Heritage Site, including some of the most prominent features of the Berg, like Sani Pass, the Twelve Apostles, and Rhino Peak. Whereas The Giant’s Cup is more of a boutique hiking experience where you run in the day and relax around the fire with your partner at night!

June | catch the snow

Brr, Winter is here! Be on standby to catch the snow in the Midlands or in Underberg. Nothing can compare to the joy of rosy cheeks, puffs of smoky breath, and pristine snow. During June, inland KZN transforms into a winter wonderland. Gaze out at the majesty of snow-capped peaks while huddled around the fire with your hot chocolate.

June is also the Comrades Marathon, the world’s oldest ultramarathon spanning 89 km between Durban and Pietermaritzburg and attracting entrants from the US to Russia. The race was not held between 1941 and 1945 due to World War II and 2020 and 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic, so 2022 promises to be a great one!

Are you a jazz lover? Then, head to the Ugu Jazz Festival on KZN’s South Coast, an outdoor music extravaganza that is guaranteed to tantalize your eardrums.

July | run with the sardines

As temperatures begin to fall, the cooler ocean currents (a very specific 21° C) allow for the annual sardine run. Billions of sardines spawn south of Cape Agulhas and move northward along the east coast up to Mozambique. This creates a feeding frenzy along the KZN coast – the shoals can be as big as 7 km long, 1.5 km wide, and 30 m deep. You can even spot them from the skies! This is a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle that you need to see at least once.

Suppose you’re in more of a fancy mood. Then, why not attend the Durban July Handicap, one of the most significant events on the city’s social calendar since the late 1800s, combining outrageous fashion, entertainment, and plenty of champagne!

It’s not just KZN with the hottest events in July… Check out the Knysna Oyster Festival! Stay in deluxe Garden Route accommodation, work remotely, choose your race days, and you can play with boat trips, forest tours, moonlight beach walks, live bands, nite golf, heritage tours, and wine, beer, and gin tasting. Plus, don’t forget the mouth-watering OYSTERS!

August | celebrate women

August is Women’s Month, a chance to show the incredible ladies in your life how much you respect and admire them. Women’s Day in SA commemorates the 1956 march of more than 20,000 women to protest the Apartheid regime. Nowadays, the day serves to remind us of the need for equality, equity, and the dismantling of patriarchy.

Take advantage of the holiday to enjoy a girls’ trip, filled with pampering and relaxation, or gents, plan a memorable getaway to show how much you care.

September | scents of spring

After a chilly Winter, spring into Spring with the ultimate vacay! Springtime is a season of renewal and rejuvenation and the perfect time for traveling SA.

With balmy breezes and sultry sunshine on the coast and fresh air and new life in the countryside, you’ll be spoiled for choice! Plus, you can head to the Garden Route to marvel at the wildflowers.

September 24th marks Heritage Day, a salute to our rich cultural diversity. So take some time to step away from the braai and discover more about your country. There’s so much to see and do while learning more about our history, from the UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Berg to the Castle in Cape Town and even the Sterkfontein caves.

Also worth checking out – the Durban Ports Festival, a maritime event for the whole family, and the Strawberry Festival in George.

October | summer is coming

It’s never too early to start to think about Summer… soaking up the sun on a golden beach, cocktail in hand… Life’s good. Plan to book your Summer vacay early to avoid disappointment and get ready to make magical memories in December.

November | deals for days

Start saving, fellow South Africans! November is Black Friday – and you just know that we’re going to have insane, unbelievable, totally crazy deals on fabulous holidays, just for you!

A word to the wise: get your Christmas presents early in November and save during the Festive Season! Plus, we think you should seriously consider giving the gift of travel – it’s something the lucky recipient will never forget.

December | family festivities

Ah, Christmas feels like it was just a few days ago… But that doesn’t mean you can’t get ready for next year. Seriously, maybe just leave the tree and decorations up!

The holiday season is a time of peace, joy, love, and hope, so make sure you plan how you’re going to be spending it with your friends and family.

Let’s make it epic…

2022 promises to be jam-packed full of thrilling activities and plenty of opportunities to explore South Africa. Whatever you choose to do, we can’t wait to be your partners-in-crime – wherever you go, we have the perfect resort in mind for you. Click here to book your vacay now.

Cheers to 2022 – and to you!

Love,

Team Flexi Club

Let’s celebrate the most magical season of the year together!

We’re so glad to be sharing peace and harmony with you as we end off another remarkable year together.

2021 was filled with highs, lows, challenges, triumphs, worries, and more… but, we’ve gotten through it. No matter the trials that come, we are stronger together, and this year has proved that. We are so grateful to you, our Flexi Family for being a part of this journey with us. So, in that same spirit, as we look ahead to 2022, we are filled with excitement: a new year, a fresh start, and the promise of the unexpected – let’s make it one for the ages, with plenty of vacays!

Christmas and New Year are a time for family, with good food, warm days, and plenty of R&R. Of course, the best place to do that is at one of our resorts, where you can unwind in unmatched bliss.

Festive au natural

When you think of Christmas, it’s easy to get swept up in the Eurocentric fantasy of snow, festoons of mistletoe, and chestnuts roasting on an open fire. Our Mzansi Festive Season is nothing like that – we’re more likely to have a shisa nyama than a turkey, the sweltering heat has us wishing for Winter again, and we’d probably have to replace our mistletoe with prickly succulents, which doesn’t have quite the same effect.

Differences are good, though. So take some time this holiday season to celebrate the unique beauty of our own country, from our craggy mountain peaks to arid stretches of savannah, bustling metropolises to quaint countryside villages, verdant tropical forests to golden beaches, and everything in between. We’ve been blessed to have the best of every kind of holiday right on our doorstep – whether you want to ski, surf, or simply relax down at the spa, let us help you do more for less.

If you’re a beach babe who loves the salty tang of the ocean, you’d be spoiled for choice with our gorgeous properties along the coast from Langebaan in the Western Cape all the way to St Lucia in Northern KZN. So head down to the picturesque Knysna lagoon or drink in the dramatic, rugged views of Hole in the Wall in the Eastern Cape.

Or if you’re more of a bush baby, preferring to retreat inland during the Summer, why not explore the Magaliesberg mountains or cool off at Hartbeespoort or Sterkfontein dams? There’s plenty of watersports to enjoy – and our resorts have sparkling, crystal-clear swimming pools that are begging you to dive into their calm blue waters.

Perhaps you’d prefer to ring in the New Year from the majesty of the Drakensberg, spending the first day of the New Year paddling in icy streams or rafting down mighty rivers before a leisurely hike to enjoy the full splendour of the scenic sky-blue panorama from the summit on high. But, of course, we also have gorgeous properties on the Midlands Meander where you can gaze out at the wonder of creation or explore the best of small-town life and sample farm-fresh produce.

Feast a la festive

Now that you’ve chosen your locale, the next essential question is…

Who’s cooking? Us or you? We might be a bit biased, but we have some world-class chefs on our side.

Plan your escape to include a lavish traditional Christmas dinner with turkey and cranberry sauce, or switch things up with an unconventional citrusy roast lamb. Cutting back on the carbs? Try our fish braai or a juicy steak. If you want to pig out with pizza, be posh with a prim-and-proper sit-down lunch, or cheer in the New Year with champagne, darling, we have you covered!

But, if you want to keep your traditions alive, choose one of our self-catering apartments or chalets where you can cook up a storm and take advantage of our fully-equipped kitchens to maximise your meal – think your natural cooking skills meets professional equipment. You can have all the comfort of a homecooked dinner in the luxury of our resorts – it’s the best of both worlds!

Fabulous Festive Fun

This time of the year is about celebrating the things that matter most to you – including the special people in your life. It’s better to give than to receive, so think about how you can spoil your loved ones with a host of holiday extras that’ll help to create a once-in-a-lifetime experience, something they can cherish forever.

Go on an epic horse ride and live out your fairy-tale dreams or cruise around the lagoon, taking in the sights of lush green coastal vegetation and stunning wildlife – from eland to exotic birds. Maybe you’d prefer to glide down the promenade, stopping by at the trendiest restaurants on Durban’s Golden Mile or Sea Point’s Millionaires Mile in Cape Town to live it up before catching sundowners on Clifton beach or cocktails in Umhlanga Village.

Want a guided tour of the Mother City, where you get to discover our rich cultural heritage? Or how about you get your adrenaline pumping while you soak up the sun at one of our waterparks. The adventures doesn’t need to end there, though – you could take it to the extreme with surfing, white-water rafting, kayaking, or even a helicopter ride.

If you prefer the air-conditioned indoors, why not take advantage of our well-stocked libraries or schedule a splendid spa day full of relaxing, refreshing treatments to get you feeling like a whole new you. Think about getting mum a massage, planning a day of tranquil flyfishing for dad, or treating your boo to breakfast in bed.

We have something for the kiddos too – your little ones will adore our Fred. Fred hosts games, singing competitions, and dance-offs that will leave the tiny humans giggling with delight while you get to enjoy some well-deserved time off from parental duties.

Safety First… Always

Last but not least – in fact, maybe the most important thing to consider is safety. Right now, a road trip is probably safer than a flight, and local is the most lekker! So think about exploring your province and planning a vacay closer to home.

With our Covid-19 safety protocols, we have made every possible effort to keep you and your loved ones safe while you holiday with us. All resorts are strictly compliant with government-issued Covid-regulations as well as social distancing protocols.

In addition, Flexi Club has implemented the PristinePurposeCleaned programme to transform their resorts into Covid-safe zones, to ensure you can focus on your holiday. This includes cutting-edge organic health passages, sterilising foggers, a pristine door seal, and the usual masks, gloves, face shields, no-contact thermometers, and sanitisers. As a result, you’ll be safer with us than you would be at home!  The other thing to think about is the space – you’ll be secluded in safety at your fully-equipped chalet, with private garden space and all the benefits of the great outdoors, far away from other humans. It sounds like bliss!

The choice is yours: however you choose to spend the Festive Season, we’re here to make your getaway dreams come true. Because you deserve it, and we love getting to do what we do.

And on that note, we want to take a moment to thank you. Your support means so much to us, and we consider it a very great privilege to be able to help you experience your dream holiday. Over the last few years, we’ve come to see that holidays aren’t just a luxury anymore – they’re an essential bit of self-care for both you and your loved ones. A holiday allows you to pause, breathe, and hit refresh. It gives you a chance to reconnect with yourself and the people around you or a brief moment to reflect and truly drink in the beauty, complexity, and fragility of the human experience. You need that – and we hope you get it soon.

So, here’s to a Festive Season filled with love, light, joy, and peace. We hope you have many more vacays in 2022 – and we can’t wait to make even more magical memories with you!

With all our love,
Team Flexi
