Gifting a Getaway

“The joy of brightening other lives becomes for us the magic of the holidays.” W.C. Jones

Christmas gifts we can hold are usually what we find under the Christmas tree, but what about giving the gift of an experience to remember forever + you’re included! Everyone would love to find a holiday under their trees this festive period because spending time unwinding and connecting with you is truly an irreplaceable experience your loved ones can treasure.

Yeah, THINGS are awesome – they rock! Getting new devices, game consoles, home décor, pamper treats, etc. is AMAZING. But getting to join you on a weekend vacay, midweek getaway, or 7-day holiday is as epic as it gets for the person you want to treat this Christmas! And we know you and your loved ones deserve EPIC! When gifting a getaway, it’s all about WHO you’re asking to join you on the getaway and what they would like. It’s amazing because you’re part and parcel of the gift – but don’t worry, you DON’T have to wrap yourself up with a bow on your head and have a Christmas jingle prepared – but you DO need to do a little planning to ensure it’s the gift that keeps on giving! We’ve got all the details you will need to plan that perfect getaway gift…

Step One. Decide on who you’re taking on a holiday…

  1. Spouse/Partner
  2. Family
  3. Bestie or your crew
  4. Sibling, family member, or a special someone you are craving time with

Step Two. Find out what kind of holidaymakers are coming on vacay with you! It’s all about knowing what your favourite humans like! This can be the hardest step because everyone has different preferences when it comes to holidaying! Everyone has a holidaymaker type, even you! And because you’re joining in on the vacation, finding the best spot for all to enjoy is the trick to booking the perfect holiday that suits everyone involved – it makes the getaway gift-giving a legendary experience. Before you go ahead and book the holiday gift you’re itching to go on with your favourite humans… first, let’s understand each kind of holidaymaker…

Workaholic Holidaymaker

Everyone knows that person who finds the time to work ALL.THE.TIME! That near-and-dear work-lover who is sending emails, checking their inbox, making calls, and setting goals and deadlines EVEN when it’s supposed to be “switch-off-from-the-grind” time. Even on holiday, they need a comfy place to charge and use their work devices and have access to WiFi. Well, a workaholic holidaymaker is the trickiest of all the holidaymaker types. Workaholic holidaymakers will be in their work-life-balance element at a resort with business facilities such as stable Wi-Fi and childminders available.

If your partner or bestie is a workaholic, take them on a holiday to Club Mykonos Langebaan where they will be perfectly positioned to access work and downtime at the flip of a switch – blending the two and creating a balance of work and play that works for them and your getaway plans too. Club Mykonos has everything a workaholic would want from WiFi, meeting rooms, and conferencing options to fun-in-the-sun activities and relaxation hot spots onsite and nearby.

Adventurer Holidaymaker

We’re all a little afraid of this holidaymaker because they’re daring and courageous and always looking for the next big thrill. While many of us are just okay going to a resort to relax, chill by the pool or even nap longer, the Adventurer holidaymaker is someone who thrives on adrenalin, and they seek it out at every opportunity. Think: long hikes, galloping along a mountain or beach trail on horseback, spinning on an off-road quadbike track, or running around with clear targets in a paintball war!

If your children or crew are adventurers looking for that next big thrill, booking somewhere like Bushman’s Nek Berg and Trout Resort is the ideal spot to quench the adrenaline-junkie thirst, with a variety of onsite activities in the nearby vicinity including adventure golf, ziplining, horse-riding, hiking, paintball and much, much more!

Beach Bum Holidaymaker

Now, we’re not in the business of judging the ‘beach bum’ holidaymakers we know (and love) – instead, we EMBRACE these beach-loving, sand-covered, wind-in-their-hair beach folk – because we know how much the beaches rock. While we may enjoy the beach in moderation, the beach bum craves an overload of the sand, surf, and sun. These are the people in your life who enjoy bonfires on the beach and chilling on the sand watching the sunrise or sunset over the ocean with sand between their toes (and everywhere else!) They revel in nature, run into the waves with no inhibitions and soak up every chance they can to be on the beach with the salty wind in their hair. Don’t run from the beach bum, embrace them – help them find their beach bliss and take them on a holiday where ‘Life’s a Beach’.

Show the beach bum in your life just how much you love them by booking into Hole in the Wall on the Sunshine Coast in the Eastern Cape. The nature-lover you take along will thank you for their getaway in nature’s paradise living right in the natural bay. There are beach hikes, nature trails, a playground on the beach for the kids, amazing daily food and drink specials at the resort restaurant, plus more!

Explorer Holidaymaker

When you think “explorer” sometimes Christopher Columbus or Vasco de Gama can come to mind – What about Dora the Explorer or Tad the Lost Explorer? They’re also recent popular choices that come to mind when you hear “EXPLORER.” And you’ll be right to think that! Explorer holidaymakers get involved and colour every experience with the “intrigued” brush. They find exploring bookshops, museums, antique stores, pristine beaches and quirky pavement cafes for people-watching exciting.

The Palace in Durban or Breakers in Umhlanga is a perfect spot to book for that explorer holiday where they (and you) can explore the vibrant and trendy parts of KZN – as well as find quirky, unusual and intriguing places to fill their time. From museums, historical sites and quaint bookshops to seaside explorations like boat cruises, whale-watching or dolphin-watching – you can excite the explorer in 100s of ways!

Penny Pincher Holidaymaker

This kind of holidaymaker is best kept close as they know the best deals at the best prices and how to make the best getaway out of any budget. This person loves the extra special deal where you get activities and extras at a discount or for free! So, even when you’re taking this kind of holidaymaker along, ensure you’re saving big and getting the biggest bucketload for every buck! This will surely put the Christmas sparkle in their smile when they find out you saved yourself some dough, too.

Stay with your penny pincher in a Bushveld setting at Manzi Monate, a tranquil resort just a short drive from Pretoria. You have access to the city hot spots or can choose family fun on the resort. There are tons of things to do without overspending: picnic followed by a dreamy snooze under the trees, games, playground, movie room, free-form swimming pool, gladiator’s course, tennis, bike rides, giant chess set, trampolines, fishing – or get the whole family together for a round of mini-golf or volleyball. There’s so much to choose from without breaking the bank. Spice up the life of the penny pincher holidaymaker by booking this resort with savings at every step. The budget-conscious person you are taking along might even agree to a small splurge to visit the nearby attractions like the Botanical Gardens, a game park, Pretoria Zoo, and the Sammy Marks Museum.

Holidaymaker Blending

Because YOU’RE part of the gifted getaway, it’s important to figure out what type of holidaymaker you are. Then, you can match it up with the holidaymaker you are taking on vacation.

If it’s a group of people, list their holidaymaker types and find a fusion vacay hot spot so that everyone’s excited when they find out – it also helps all prepare and look forward to the upcoming vacay slay. For example, a resort on the North Coast of KZN like Lake View Cabanas or La Montagne has WiFi facilities for those workaholics who still need a hit of the office access online and opportunities for the beach bum to laze on the shore, with water sports galore and game drive options for the adventurer, as well as tons of places to explore nearby if you’re looking to get to know the wilderness or city more – and their rates are affordable for the penny pincher holidaymakers to have some peace of mind that you got the best accommodation deal out there.

If you’re an adventurer but you’re taking your bestie along – who is an explorer – you can book Riviera Suites so that you can explore adventure activities like paragliding and shark diving while the explorer holidaymaker you take along can wander through Cape Town’s many museums, bookshops, outdoor discoveries and more.

Now, you’re free to enjoy the planning process because you’ve got all the info on how to go about taking your favourite person/people on a local getaway as a Christmas gift. Sharing the holiday fun is the most exciting gift to give. Taking your loved ones on a getaway to make great memories is the ultimate cherry on top of this year’s grand moves!

Merry Christmas!

Life’s Adventure List

“A bucket list is an invitation to dream bigger.”- Anette White

Where did the year go, right? What did we do with our time? This is when we start taking stock of the year and everything we wanted to achieve in 2022.

As the year winds down, preparing for an epic 2023 becomes the focus. Listing what you want to achieve and where you want to go in life (and leisure) is a great way to stay focused on the goals you’re still working on. Didn’t tick everything off your bucket list this year? No worries! Don’t even have a bucket list yet? Not a problem! We’ve got some ideas on how to plan that bucket list event, holiday, or activity you have been itching to tick off. Think of it as the match that ignites your planning toward keeping your life goals lit!

Life doesn’t always go as planned, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t plan. Staying flexible when you plan is the key to ticking off items on your list. It’s a very personal process that involves your wants and desires. One of the things we always find on a bucket list is the places we want to visit both in South Africa and beyond our borders. Listing them helps you start a schedule for when those epic experiences will best suit your time and budget.

While international travel is definitely on the cards, you can warm up your bucket list by listing local places you’ve always wanted to visit and the thrilling activities you’ve always wanted to experience. For many of us, there are things others do all the time that we haven’t quite got the opportunity to do – like diving, horse riding, or even go-karting! This is not about being ashamed that you’ve never been on a bike or jet ski, it’s about turning the bucket list on its head and making your own rules for the “firsts” you want to experience.

What is a Bucket list?

A bucket list is a number of experiences or achievements that a person hopes to have or accomplish during their lifetime.

It’s an itemized list of goals someone wants to achieve before they (to put it mildly) “kick the bucket”. Often, a bucket list includes big accomplishments, travel, and fun things we’d like to experience in our lives. First up… brainstorm your bucket list. It’s all about you and what you want to do. Ask yourself… what do you want to experience? Where do you want to travel to? What do you want to see and do when you get there?

What kind of things can go on a bucket list?

Think epic once-in-a-lifetime experiences! South Africa is known for its amazing landscapes and top tourist-attraction-type adventures. So, it’s all here for the picking! You can start your bucket list right here where you are. Always wanted to swim with sharks? You can book in at Bantry Bay in Cape Town with a full view of the ocean in anticipation of your upcoming dive with the sharks. From the resort, you have access to Cape Town and all its bucket-listing opportunities like visiting the soul-stirring Robben Island, climbing/hiking up Table Mountain, or even paragliding!

Here are a few examples of wants some people put on their bucket list:

  • A desire to travel (road trip with the besties or a flight to an exotic location).
  • A longing to do a daring activity (animal encounters, shark-cage diving, feeding crocodiles, etc.).
  • A wish to accomplish a personal goal (travelling alone or white water rafting in the wilderness).
  • A yearning to achieve specific life milestones (“by 40, I want to climb 3 mountains or cycle from Cape Town to Knysna”).
  • A craving to spend even more quality time with friends and family (a week away in the mountains or by the beach with your parents and children – making epic family memories where everyone’s included).

How you decide what’s on your bucket list is entirely up to you and your craving! What have you always wanted to do? What have you always wanted to see? Where have you always wanted to visit?

If you’ve always wanted to “live as one” with the wildlife in South Africa, see the Big Five up close and personal, and even experience close contact with the animals that could eat you – Mabalingwe Nature Reserve is all about getting back to nature on a spectacular 9,500-hectare wild South African landscape. There are tons of things so many of us haven’t done, yet! If you’ve never ridden a horse before and that’s on your bucket list? Enjoy a horse ride in the Bushveld solo or with family to encourage you to keep living your dreams. We all want different things – that’s what makes us especially unique, and the same goes for your bucket list items. Your bucket list is totally unique to you… so comparing your list with family is only allowed because it can give you great ideas to add to your own list.

How to make a bucket list

It’s in the simplicity of your bucket list that you can get that legendary feeling of success and accomplishment. Legends make bucket lists! So, get started on creating your legendary tale – something people will talk about for decades to come! “…Remember when… (insert your name) went swimming with the sharks and survived??!!!” #Legendary

If you’re still struggling with what to put on your list, here are a few things to consider…

  • Start with the easy stuff and think about the things you wanted to do when you were a kid.
  • What predictable stuff do you feel you want to do? Bungee jump? Skydive?
  • What about adding some weird stuff? Eating snails, frog legs, or Mopani worms?

The key to making a short and simple bucket list is thinking about the overall experience you want! Decide what’s super important to you and move that to the top of your list! Prioritizing helps prevent making a list you never get down to doing. If you’re stuck for ideas about what goes onto your list (and in what order), ask your friends for their suggestions – they, after all, are the people who know you best! You can even rope one or two in to join you, provided that trip, activity, or adventure is on their bucket list too.

What about a girls‘ trip or a boys’ weekend away?  You can do one or two things on your bucket list with friends nearby for support and encouragement. Perna Perna Umdloti on the KZN North Coast is right on the ocean with options for your water sport bucket list. From surfing on the unpredictable seas, microlight flights over Umdloti and the nearby cane fields to even piloting a jet ski on the untamed ocean. Things we have never done before are actually there to relish – it’s taking the moment to be proud of what you are trying to do for the first time EVER – and accomplishing it is a bucket list boss move! #BossMove

Holiday Bucket list

Ultimately, your bucket list is your own personal grand “To-Do” List. You’re in charge and in control! When it comes to your Holiday or Travel Bucket List, South Africa has it all: beach, bush, Berg and EVERYTHING in between from river adventures, wetlands and lakes to caves, mountain tops and more! Adding an experience to your bucket list is even easier when you’re on an adventure holiday.

Beach Bucket list?

When you make your next bucket-list-holiday HQ the Breakers resort, next to the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve – you’ll have tons of bucket list options like scuba diving, helicopter and aeroplane flights, or even a Mindgame Escape room adventure.

Bush Bucket list?

BushTime at Mabula, in the foothills of the Waterberg Mountains – you can stay in the Mabula Private Game reserve and get up close and personal with nature. Tick that night safari off your local bucket list, or even go on a Lake Kyle Safari where there are free-roaming lions!

Berg bucket list?

Book into the Drakensberg Sun and tick more mountain adventures off your list, like the Drakensberg Canopy Tour where you experience ziplines over the most amazing views with the sounds of a flowing river below. What about Abseiling? Close encounter with reptiles and falcons? Or a helicopter ride over the majestic hills?

You got this!

Making a bucket list is really about just shaking things up. It’s about creating experiences that you will be talking about to friends and family, and thinking back on with a smile – while appreciating the courage and dedication it took to just Tick.It.Off! #LifeGoals

Whatever experiences are on your bucket list, YOU are the guide. You are in control of what you do, when you do it, and what you get out of the experience. It’s what makes a bucket list such an electrifying and powerful act for personal growth and those kick-butt memories.

So, are you ready to start that bucket list?

Trips & Tips for Twos

Travel together and get lost in beautiful places!

When your significant other is happy, you’re even happier, right? Surprising the love of your life with that romantic getaway can get the sparks flying and the passion pulsing. Wherever you’re planning to stay, the most important part of a romantic getaway is reconnecting with the one your heart desires the most.

Why should you plan a romantic getaway? To create those sparkling (and lasting) memories for your partner’s birthday, special anniversary, an “I’m sorry” treat, or just for the love of love. There are so many reasons to celebrate the love you two share. Whatever the occasion (or even if there isn’t a specific life event), how you plan your romantic getaway is key to the experience being lit.

Here are a few ideas on how to get started when planning that passionate holiday. Be prepared to fall in love with your special someone, again.

Planning a Surprise Romantic Holiday

Planning a surprise takes some serious sneaking – but in a good way. Trying to fend off your partner’s suspicions of sneaky behaviour can be hectic. But the best surprise is when he/she doesn’t even suspect a thing. This is obviously easier said than done, especially if the love of your life is a natural detective. When planning a surprise holiday, here are 6 steps to follow to help you sink into the romantic surprise experience.

Step 1: Clear Both Your Schedules – this one is the trickiest. Especially when you’re planning a midweek getaway. How do you tell your partner to take midweek leave off work without giving away the surprise? Well, you know your partner best. Would telling them you have important stuff to do at home cut it for them? For example:

  • Cleaning out the garage or spring cleaning the home?
  • Sorting out the garden or redesigning the kid’s room/kitchen?
  • Friends or family of yours (that your partner doesn’t know, of course) are visiting for the week from overseas?

It may seem like a stretch, but this really depends on your partner and what they’re most likely to believe. Yes, it sounds like very sneaky work (#sneakattack), but it’ll be worth it when they are whisked away by you and spoilt with romance and fun on that hot-under-the-collar holiday. If all else fails, another option is to let your partner choose the timeframe themselves, without telling them anything else.

Step 2: Decide Where You are Going – whether you choose the bush, Berg, or beach as your favoured spot for spark-flying romance, try and find a getaway destination where you can shake off your normal routine. Choose something you both will enjoy:

  • Do you want pristine mountain views with crisp fresh mornings and sundowners beside the bonfire? The tranquil Castleburn can help your love blossom as you wander through the elegant peaks of the Southern Drakensberg.
  • Do you want to tend to your ever-growing love in the lush-green Garden Route? Pinnacle Point Beach and Golf Resort has secluded beaches and incredible views.
  • Do you want sand between your toes and the surf crashing nearby? La Côte d’Azur has a nearby tidal pool (& rock pools) for quiet ocean dips and a Wellness Spa for relaxing couple’s massages.

Step 3: Plan for Fun Activities – Every couple is unique, so this step is the ultimate “You do you” step in the plan. Being out of the normal day-to-day setting means you have plenty of time to fill, making those cosy memories. You know your partner best… what do they like?

  • Outdoor sports?
  • Indoor spoils?
  • Dining at trendy restaurants?
  • Historical sites?

Whatever you’re thinking, remember to ‘keep connecting’ in mind. Picking activities where you and your boo can get up close and personal or stare into each other’s eyes trumps sweating up a storm meters apart on a hike or ziplining separately. Find tandem activities to keep the focus on the closeness between you two. Planning cuddle time, hand-in-hand walks, intimate catch-up chats or sitting in silence watching the sunset are also super romantic, especially if you don’t always have the time for this kind of connecting during your normal week.

Step 4: Find the Best Places To Eat – If your partner’s a foodie, this step may be harder! Either way, do some research about the best places to eat before you go. Food is the one thing in the day you will have to make time for to keep your energy up for all that… (wink wink) romantic activity! So, think of your and your lover’s favourite foods and plan the meal destinations. Prior to booking or leaving, in general conversation, find out what your other half is craving. It can add that extra touch of romantic flair if you’ve even planned some exciting top taste-bud moments. Think variety, location, and privacy for some of them. This could mean:

  • a picnic on the beach in a secluded area or by a waterfall
  • a quiet booth at the resort restaurant
  • a private table at a nearby exclusive restaurant

Step 5: Pack Your Bags – this is also tricky, so make lists! We suggest putting these headings on your list:

  • Clothes
  • Shoes
  • Toiletries/Cosmetics
  • Swimming & Activities Gear
  • Electronics & Chargers

Plus other items that may be unique to you and your partner, e.g. medication pack or fishing gear (depends on your choices).

Lists also help for the reveal moment, so if you decide to give your partner 10 minutes to take whatever they MUST HAVE before you get in the car to get-a-way, you will have a list they can look at to see what’s already in the bag. Don’t forget the daypack/backpack to use during the day on mini-exploring sessions and while you’re on little adventures. Usually, a backpack that can fit phones, water bottles, maybe easy-to-eat snacks, and towels will do.

Step 6: Decide How You Will Reveal – Now, this is the fun part! Whether you tell them as soon as you book it, wait ‘til the last moment to reveal the plan, blindfold your partner on the drive or flight, or add even more romance with a slow reveal of love notes with clues in the weeks or days leading up to the trip (to heighten the anticipation) – everyone’s gonna LOVE the reveal because: Who DOESN’T love a holiday? And a romantic one at that!

Best Romantic Getaways

Romantic getaways don’t always have to be a surprise! We’ll say it again: Who DOESN’T love a holiday? And a romantic one at that! So, springing the idea on your partner and sitting down with them to plan the romance can be fun for you both. This just means that the connecting starts even before you’ve packed your bags or decided where you’re going to do your best canoodling.

Take bae out for a yummy dinner date and share your plans for this amazing romantic getaway. Discuss ideas about the best places to go or the fun stuff you both want to get up to. Communication is key in a good relationship and the same goes for a good romantic getaway trip. Being clear about what you want and expect helps the rest of the planning and the actual alluring adventure go smoother than silk.

Finding out if your significant other prefers the beach over the Berg will help you decide whether you should book Caribbean Estates on the Wild Coast or Mount Champagne in the Berg. Knowing if your spouse loves swimming or spa spoils will help you decide on the best ‘holiday prep gift’ to get: a snazzy cozzie or a comfy fluffy gown in their size? Or Both! Deciding on walks on the beach or horse riding (on the beach or in the Berg) helps to decide whether to pack your flops or boots (with the fur). Here are a few important things to discuss when you sit down to chat with your favourite person about this next romantic getaway:

  1. Where should we go? Bush, Berg, beach!
  2. When should we go?
  3. What should we do in our free time? Activities or stay in bed! (Maybe, a bit of both?)
  4. What kind of foods do we want to eat there? Pasta or local game, etc.
  5. How are we going to pack?

If you’ve got kids or pets, you can even add: Where do we leave the kids, dogs, etc.?

Second Honeymoon Ideas

Whether you’re fanning the flames of your love life or rekindling the fire, planning a second honeymoon can bring the heat. When we say “honeymoon” what do you think of? Cosy cuddles by the fireplace? Sundowners and sexy smiles? Skinny dipping? Never leaving the room unless you have to? Massages? Feeding each other chocolate and strawberries? Romantic walks on the beach or in the mountains?

We know ‘life happens’, so if you’ve never been on a honeymoon – for whatever reason – planning some personal time with the love of your life is key to rekindling the passion. And even if you’ve been on the best honeymoon ever – even if your normal life routine allows many moments to reconnect – taking a break from the same schedule to make special memories with your spouse can relight your fire of love. It can shift the energies between you and your better half as you remember your first honeymoon. Memories are everything, and creating new honeymoon memories to cherish can be the key to making it to the next anniversary with big smiles.

What to keep in mind when planning a second honeymoon:

  1. Where? – Ask your partner where they would like to go.
  2. When? – It doesn’t need to be your anniversary to plan that honeymoon adventure! Marriage can be hard, and you guys deserve the treat of not waiting too long.
  3. Upgrade the experience – If you’re looking at local options, check which resorts have penthouse suites or honeymoon suites to up the experience of love. For example, the La Montagne Penthouse comes with all the frills and thrills to elevate the romance.
  4. Pack appropriately – If you’re going for cocktails to the beach, slops and thongs are more appropriate than if you’re going horse-riding in the Berg where boots and takkies are needed for rides, golf, trails, or romantic hikes.
  5. Get excited together – However long ago you got married, think about how far you both have come together, and relish the excitement from the planning stage to the check-in, and especially while you’re on your love adventure. This is the key to making it stick in your long-term memory banks. And while things may happen you CAN NOT tell the grandkids about, you can still reminisce together long after you’ve returned home.
  6. Itinerary – Plan ‘honeymoon-like’ activities and simple sweet gestures: petals trails to the bedroom, champagne/wine by the fire, spa treatments for two, feeding each other chocolates and strawberries on the beach, trekking around the resort (and nearby hot spots) hand-in-hand admiring the world with love as the filter.

There’s no time like the present to enjoy a romantic getaway and activate the “love filter.” Whisk your lover off to infuse your mid-week with those passionate memories. With loads of resorts to cater to you and your lover’s needs and wants, the fun really starts in the planning phase.

Spring into A Heritage Day Experience

“Nothing ever seems impossible in spring, you know” – L.M Montgomery.

Possibilities are everywhere, especially when Spring vibes meet Heritage Month celebrations! Flowers, freshness, and festivity reign. Technically, Spring in the Southern Hemisphere only starts on the 23rd of September – which is perfect timing for that Heritage Day Experience.

What does Heritage Day actually involve, though? From dressing in our most iconic traditional clothing to gathering and sharing our culture’s unique food and music, there are no set rules for how we choose to celebrate. Many of us unite in the celebration of Braai Day (also on the 24th of Sept) to celebrate a custom we all share: Tjops (and Dops!) Instead of staying home and sticking close to your own braai this year, we think a Heritage Day Experience can create a blooming effect in both body and mind!

Whether it’s just you, you and bae, or the whole family, discovering our country’s rich history by visiting one of the many South African heritage sites can cause some serious soul blossoming.

Have you got that Heritage Day Spring Swag?

With the sun stronger on your skin and the skies a brighter blue, it makes springing into action a breeze. South Africa is sprinkled with heritage sites across the country, and warming up your spirits with a spring trip can mean taking a moment to admire not just the lush scenery but also our rich history which is a big part of our culture.

Best Day Trip Destinations

Raise the temperature even more by grabbing your partner and taking an unexpected road trip. Create a stir with some spring swagger by piling the family (or your besties) in the car for an impromptu adventure. Whoever you choose to travel with, let’s all agree: Day trips rock! And making the destination a heritage site can add that extra magic to the day! We suggest soul-stirring places like the Nelson Mandela Capture Site (in Howick) or the Cradle of Mankind (in Gauteng.)

The Cradle of Humankind was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.

Traveller, Aaron Spray says it “…showcases the history of humans in a way that nowhere else in the world does.

Now, that’s goosebump-worthy! This heritage hotspot is around 50 Kilometres (or 31 Miles) Northwest of Johannesburg. If you don’t live in and around Jozi, book in at Magalies Park Resort for the weekend, and plan a day trip to explore this fascinating spot that’s like no other IN THE WORLD!

In 1962, on August 5th, after being on the run for over a year, Nelson Mandela was captured by Apartheid police just outside Howick, Kwa Zulu Natal. The spot where he was taken into custody is now officially known as the Nelson Mandela Capture Site, which includes a Visitors’ Centre and a world-renowned sculpture. The sculpture is an iconic collection of columns, and when viewed 35 metres away, it magically reveals Madiba’s face in profile. It’s truly some good ol’ Madiba Magic! Seeing it in pictures online doesn’t do this sculpture justice. It’s something you can only experience standing in that very spot. This is why the Capture Site is one of our top picks for your Heritage Day Trip Experience. Make it a day trip or a special stop on the way when you book in for the weekend at Whispering Waters, where added fun activities like adventure golf, bird watching, fishing, canoeing and hiking can fill up your time.

Hike or Ferry on holiday

Spring is warm-up season. The sparks of a promising summer have been lit. Wildflowers begin to emerge, brushing the landscape with magnificent colours, like a work of art. Now, all that’s left is to put yourself into that picture.

Cape Town is the perfect place to call your HQ for your Heritage Day Holiday Experience, with many official and non-official historical heritage sites on offer. So, it can be as intense or low-key as you want it to be. The City of Cape Town boasts two of the most iconic World Heritage Sites: Table Mountain and Robben Island

Whether you choose to take the cable car or hike up, the view from the top of Table Mountain will have you feeling on top of the world. A hike means even more contact with the thrilling wildlife which keeps animal lovers and the kids excited – from dassies, porcupines and mongooses to snakes, tortoises and a rare amphibian called the Table Mountain Ghost Frog. We’ve even heard there’s a possibility of raptor sightings! Don’t worry, it’s not the Jurassic World, velociraptor-type!  We’re talking about jackal buzzards, booted eagles, African harrier-hawks, peregrine falcons and rock kestrels. Now that’s what we call a bird’s-eye view!

Robben Island is famous as the place where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years. The island represents the triumph of democracy and freedom over oppression, symbolizing the resilience of humanity over hardship and adversity. Visiting this heritage site promises profound insight, understanding and appreciation for how far we have come.

So, after a trek up Table Mountain or a long day exploring Robben Island, you’ll have legit reason to book that relaxing and rejuvenating spa session. Check out these holiday spots to call home at either the Mount Sierra or Riviera Suites. Both boast our famous La Vita Wellness Spa.

Celebrating the Wonder Women

August is for the beautiful ladies! While any day makes for a great chance to celebrate the phenomenal women in your life, National Women’s Day on August 9th gives you one more reason to do just that.

Women are the epitome of strength, love, sacrifice and courage. The role of women in today’s world has changed significantly and for the better. Empowering women creates positive impressions and can help society to grow and develop at a faster pace. From professionals, mothers, and partners to sisters, confidantes, housewives or CEOs – women can take on as many or as few roles as they desire, and the key is that it’s their choice.

This Women’s Month, let’s empower, honour, and celebrate the beauty and strength of South African women in our circles. Remember to support businesses owned by women, donate old clothes to girls’ orphanages, advocate for gender equality in your workplace, and celebrate female colleagues, creators, artists, and authors.

Make this month memorable – whether that means attending Women’s Day events, booking a special getaway, going to the spa, or simply grabbing coffee with your favourite ladies, the fabulous females deserve to be treated like queens.

Here are a few beautiful places you can go to celebrate Women’s Month. There’s something for the beachside bombshells, the city sisters, dam-sels in this dress and the country girls!

Beachside Bombshells

For a seaside escape and sunkissed skin, head to sunny KZN. Whether you head North and stay at beautiful La Montagne or chill in Durbs and stay at The Palace, the warm Indian Ocean awaits.

Throw on your beach wrap, sunnies and sandals and soak up the sun while taking golden hour selfies. Book a relaxing spa day and indulge in luxurious treatments that’ll soothe your mind, body, and soul. Skip the cooking and enjoy delicious meals at the onsite restaurant and sundowners with magnificent ocean views.

City Sisters

Explore the Mother City and stay in Gardens at Mount Sierra or Riviera Suites in Sea Point – both prime areas, and either resort provides the perfect base from which to enjoy nearby hotspots.

Spend your days mooching around vibey streets, discovering quaint cafés, exquisite galleries, and stunning photo spots with the gorgeous mountain as a backdrop. Stop at Jooma or Mount Sierra Coffee Shop for a refreshing pressed juice or your caffeine fix. Don’t forget to block out at least one full day at La Vita Spa to get your glam on!

Damsels in De-Stress

Head to Harties Dam and stay at Magalies Park for the best bush break complete with the facilities of your dreams. From heated swimming pools, volleyball and private jetty to tennis courts, casino and poolside bar, your getaway will be simply unforgettable.

After receiving incredible full body massages, enjoy bubbly in the Jacuzzi to relax your mind and muscles. Hop in the steam room and sauna for the ultimate indulgence and book a hair appointment to look and feel your best. Then put on your best dress and go for dinner and drinks at the restaurant onsite!

Country Girls

A calm and tranquil country retreat! Take in the beauty of the Berg at Bushman’s Nek or marvel at the Midlands at Midlands Saddle and Trout – you’ll leave your heart in the countryside!

Go horseback riding around the resort, picnic in the mountains, be amazed at the surreal sunsets and enjoy dinner at drinks at a cosy restaurant. Take time out for yourself with a hot stone massage and mani-pedi at La Vita Spa. Fall in love with the peace and quiet that nature offers.

To all the wonderful women out there: Shine on and continue breaking barriers and making valuable contributions to the world. You are bold, beautiful, compassionate, and caring. Keep inspiring the people around you!

Wishing you a very happy Women’s Month!

Feminism isn’t about making women strong. Women are already strong. It’s about changing the way the world perceives that strength.

“Do what you can, with what you have, wherever you are.”

This month, we as South Africans and people around the world will celebrate the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela. He was crucial in liberating our country and establishing democracy. Madiba was also known for his love, support, and selflessness.

International Mandela Day takes place every year on 18th July (Madiba’s birthday).  But what is the significance of it? For some, it means dedicating 67 minutes to a selfless deed, for others it’s just a day off from work! However, we can ALL heed the call to do something and recognise our individual power to make a difference and change the world.

Make this Mandela Day memorable by exploring the incredible historical sites all around South Africa. From the exquisite architectural design of the Capture Site to the famous Robben Island to Mandela’s Cave Hideout and City Hall where he gave his first speech after his release, these sites are an integral part of South Africa’s story.

Whether you plan a long weekend away or stay in your province, there are parts of our country’s history all around us just waiting for you to discover. Go out, find them, and give them the recognition and appreciation they deserve! Plus, take the kids along for the historical trip down memory lane.

Nelson Mandela Capture Site – Howick

This is the spot where Madiba was captured by Apartheid police on 5 August 1962 after being on the run for over a year.

They seem like a random collection of columns until you get to the footpath 35 meters away when Madiba’s profile facing West magically appears – against the backdrop of the rolling hills and valleys of the KwaZulu Natal Midlands. As you get even closer to the monument, the columns once again dissolve into a forest.

On your way from Durban to stay at Midlands Saddle and Trout or Whispering Waters, stop at the Capture Site in Howick. Stand in awe as you reflect on the events that unfolded in this very spot, 60 years ago.

Robben Island & Robben Island Museum – Cape Town

“A symbol of the triumph of the human spirit over adversity.”

Explore the island on which Mandela was held captive for 18 years.

Take a scenic boat ride across the Atlantic Ocean and go on a guided tour of Robben Island. Walk in the footsteps of those who came before us, liberating South Africa.

Stay at Riviera Suites, just a 15-minute drive from the Robben Island Museum and the ferry which will take you to the Island. Plus, grab a coffee from the resort’s Jooma Coffee Shop and pop in at V&A Waterfront for some shopping. While you’re there, don’t forget to check out Nelson Mandela’s statue standing alongside Desmond Tutu, FW de Klerk, and Albert Luthuli.

City Hall – Cape Town

Nelson Mandela stood on the balcony here and gave his first speech, hours after his release, to thousands of people. A life-size statue of him overlooks the Grand Parade from the balcony of the City Hall, standing in the same place where he spoke from.

Enjoy the picturesque Table Mountain backdrop as you explore City Hall in the heart of the Mother City.

Be sure to stay nearby at Mount Sierra or Hastings Hall, both just 10 minutes from Cape Town City Hall. Grab a light pastry and a cup of tea at Mount Sierra Coffee Shop or discover lovely street cafés along the way.

Mandela Cave Hideout – Coffee Bay

This is a lesser-known, albeit historical spot in Coffee Bay. If you’re into discovering hidden gems, this is for you.

This glorious landmark, named after the late, great Mandela, is nestled in lush greenery on the shores of the beautiful Indian Ocean.

If you’re staying at Hole in the Wall, take a 30-minute scenic drive along the coast to the Mandela Cave Hideout. Hike down to the cave and explore an awesome part of our history.

These sites are just a drop in the ocean, as there are so many other magnificent places to discover that make up a part of South Africa’s history. We are blessed to live in a country with a rich history and incredible landmarks to visit to this day.

As Mandela himself said, “When we read, we are able to travel to many places, meet many people and understand the world. We can also learn how to deal with problems we are having by learning from the lessons of the past.”

Have a happy Madiba month, everyone!

June is for chillin’ and grillin’

“A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.” – Billy Graham

They are a daughter’s first love and a son’s first hero, they are the greatest storytellers and the biggest jokesters, they are our dads! Dads are often the closest thing we have to real-life superheroes. They are strong and brave – total legends. They’re also some of the best teachers, coaches, and mentors we’ll ever have, full of wisdom and always there to cheer us on.

As June rolls around, keep in mind what important date it brings: Father’s Day on the 19th! It’s never too early to start planning how to celebrate your dad. You can make him a special Father’s Day brunch or breakfast with his favourite dishes, or even surprise him with a meat delivery so he can fire up the grill for his favourite braaivleis.

Use this month to honour the fathers in your lives, whether that be your dad, stepdad, granddad, uncle, neighbour, or any male figure that takes on a fatherly role for you. There’s nothing like the advice, love, and support from them. They’re always willing to lend a helping hand or offer an ill-timed dad joke that we can’t help but laugh at!

It’s important to treasure quality time with dad and celebrate the many roles he plays in your life. From braai master and designated driver to self-qualified mechanic and king of falling asleep on the couch – you got to love your ol’ man!

Make awesome memories with your dad this month. Enjoy fun-filled winter activities at our resorts. Go golfing on the greens, head to the dam for some fishing or cycle the road less travelled. Plus, enjoy some bonding time over the braai and remember to laugh extra loudly at his special dad jokes! Check out the resorts that will be hosting terrific Father’s Day events with dad’s favourite meals.

Make this month one he’ll always remember!

Tee-rific Golf

Bond with dad over a fun game of golf out on the Magalies Park golf course. Admire the stunning backdrop of the Magaliesberg while you and the old man enjoy the 18-hole course. Or visit one of our many resorts to challenge dad to a game of adventure golf. There are awesome mini golf courses at the below resorts:

Reel ‘em in

Is there a more “dad activity” than fishing? Having dad teach us about fishing was awesome. He baited our first hook, tied an encyclopaedia’s worth of knots and taught us that fishing often transcends catching fish. Head to the dams at the below resorts for the ultimate fishing excursion with your pops!

•    Qwantani Berg and Bush Resort
•    Midlands Saddle & Trout
•    Whispering Waters
•    Hole in the Wall
•    Magalies Park
•    Bushman’s Nek Berg & Trout

Fire up the grill

They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, so why not celebrate Father’s Day with a feast fit for a king? Dads love their dop and chop, so treat the man to braaivleis and beers on his special day.

Don’t let the cold weather stop you from spending some quality time with dad. Or if you prefer to skip the cooking, the below resorts are hosting spectacular Father’s Day events.

Book early to secure your spot!

Pedal it out

Your dad was most likely the one to teach you to ride your first bike. Recapture some of those precious moments with a bike ride down North Beach promenade or, if you’re feeling adventurous, head to Magalies Park to face the mountain bike trails. Many of our resorts offer bike hire or cycling trails that provide for the perfect Father’s Day activity.

Dads are the greatest gifts who give the best hugs and can fix just about anything. Spoil the father figures in your life with a memorable holiday and activities he’ll love! Whether you choose a golf getaway or a fishing trip, whether your dad is an adventurous risk-taker or a laid-back griller, we’re sure that his Father’s Day will be filled with love and superb experiences!

To travel is to be free!

“There is something in us that refuses to be regarded as less than human. We are created for freedom.” – Desmond Tutu

April arrives with fun and festivities – Easter, family time, and Freedom Day.  The month has so many holidays that it’s the best time for a gorgeous getaway! Whether you’re planning a solo trip, family holiday or a romantic rendezvous, travel will never disappoint.

Travelling to new places is the best way to bond with others and to reconnect with yourself. It gives you the chance to get out of your comfort zone. You’ll try new things and experience new adventures. You’ll meet new people and see new sights. Being in a new place opens your mind and your soul and makes life worth living. Ultimately, travel is freedom.

Freedom to explore, to indulge, to play, to roam, to relax, and to live life to the fullest.

Travel isn’t just sipping cocktails poolside (although that’s a part of it!). It’s also about getting to know yourself on another level, realizing what activities or foods you’re willing to try. It’s about pushing yourself to new heights and doing it with your favourite people – the ones who make you feel alive and free.

It’s important to acknowledge that our freedom was made possible by the late and great, Nelson Mandela, and many freedom fighters. This month we commemorate Freedom Day. April 27th was an iconic day in our South African history. Our first democratic elections took place, and we had the freedom to vote. With that, also came the freedom of choice, which changed our lives and our country.

As Madiba himself said, “for to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”

Let’s heed Madiba’s call and live life with respect for ourselves and our fellow South Africans. Embrace your freedom and your family this month. Book a trip and be young, wild, and free.

Bush, Berg, or Beach? Take your pick!

Can you believe it’s already the third month of the year?! You’ve worked so hard for the last two months, you deserve to treat yourself to a weekend away – plan your next super-relaxing vacay now!  Too often we wait for holidays, the festive season, or a special occasion to travel. Author, Germany Kent wrote, “happiness is achieved when you stop waiting for life to begin and start making the most of the moment you are in.” If the past two years have taught us anything, it’s that life’s too short; you have yourself, your health and your family – pack your bags and get going already.

The seasons are changing and so are you. Autumn leaves Summer behind, just like we leave a version of ourselves behind. Don’t be afraid to reinvent yourself and reimagine the life you’ve always wanted. Change is good, it’s liberating! We should all strive to better ourselves and believe that we can achieve anything we set our minds to – and that’s facts. It’s a new month, a new season, and a great opportunity to do something NEW, something BOLD, something BEAUTIFUL!

We all set goals for the year, and often we aim to travel more, spend extra time with loved ones, and prioritize self-care. But with busy schedules, it can be difficult to achieve a good balance between work and play. Life gets in the way. But, as the new season approaches, we encourage you to book the holiday you’ve been yearning for, host a family get-together and go for that spa retreat – you deserve it.

Why wait for December? March brings the end of Summer, but not really. The days are sunny enough to hit the beach or go hiking, but the Autumn breeze keeps you cool and comfortable. Simply perfect. Plus, you won’t start sweating at 10 in the morning! The temperature stays around 22 to 27 degrees throughout the day and the sun still sets late – perfect for sundowners as you round off your day’s adventures.

If you’re desperate to disconnect your phone and reconnect with your people, we feel you! Head to Magalies Park for a mountain of fun and leisure. Or opt for Qwantani Berg and Bush Resort for the best of both worlds. Left your heart in the Midlands? Bushman’s Nek and Midlands Saddle and Trout promise a peaceful countryside haven. If you’re ready to carpe diem, then head to one of our seaside resorts for blue skies and blue waters.

No passport? No problem! Wriggle your toes in sun-soaked sand or experience the African bush without crossing the border. With so much diversity right here in South Africa, your next adventure could just be a two- or three-hour drive away.

So, there’s only one question left: bush, berg, or beach?

Bush – Into the wild

Magalies Park

Combining the best of nature with the best of leisure, Magalies Park offers a peaceful retreat situated alongside the tranquil Magalies River and Magaliesberg Mountains. Relish delicious continental cuisine at Pica Pau before heading for a round of golf or a scenic hike and end off the day cozied up around the boma.

Qwantani Berg and Bush Resort

Escape the hustle and bustle of daily life at this Harrismith accommodation and enjoy privacy, entertainment, and high-end hospitality. You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to family activities. Canoe down the breath-taking Sterkfontein dam where you can also spend the day teaching the kids to fish and catch a “drive-in style” movie as the sunsets.

Berg – Countryside living

Bushman’s Nek

Situated in the picturesque foothills of Southern Drakensberg, Bushman’s Nek is bound to bring out your adventurous side to this rustic living experience. Revel in the beauty that the Berg has to offer while taking your morning coffee on the pool deck and enjoying a hearty meal at The Bushpot onsite restaurant. Plan an exciting day filled with fly fishing, mountain biking, archery, and tractor rides.

Whispering Waters

If you’re in the mood for the ultimate countryside experience, look no further. Whispering Waters is set on rolling hills and pastures of the Natal Midlands, along the gorgeous Lions River. With fully kitted, spacious accommodation and an endless stream of outdoor activities and nearby attractions, you’ll never want to leave!

Beach – Seas the day

Margate Sands

Unwind by the pool, take a long walk on the beach or indulge yourself with a relaxing treatment at Margate Sands, situated along the warm South Coast. Your luxury home away from home, Margate Sands is the perfect place for your family holiday – braai away, hop in the pool, or challenge someone to a game of table tennis at this relaxing beach resort overlooking the Indian ocean.

The Palace All-Suite

Located on Durban’s Golden Mile, with the beachfront on your doorstep, The Palace All-Suite Hotel offers convenience and comfort for a fantastic fun-filled holiday. The magnificent sea views are a feast for the eyes and the soul. Let the ocean breeze calm your mind and take all your troubles away. Grab the kids for some Vitamin D and a salty seaside escape.

La Montagne

Enjoy stunning sea views and romantic sunsets at La Montagne, situated on Ballito Beachfront with a poolside restaurant, bar, and café. Hire bikes and cycle down the promenade or enjoy a swim in the crashing waves to cool off. Lounge around with a cocktail in hand at the poolside bar (make sure to take a selfie for the ‘Gram.) Hit the squash courts to keep active and pamper yourself at the wellness-spa. You deserve it all!

Breakers

Just a 2-minute walk from Hawaan beach, Breakers offers luxury and privacy with accommodation and facilities that will instantly offer a sense of calm and relaxation. While the kids have fun in the playground, you can utilize the fitness center or book a massage that will leave you feeling brand new. Head to Umhlanga Village for buzzing nightlife and top-end restaurants to close off your night on a high. The vibes are unmatched!

There aren’t many countries that can boast bush, berg, and beach. South Africa is truly beautiful, and she holds so many hidden gems and sights to see.

We hope you’ll March into this month with a zest for life and a weekend away marked on your calendars!

Love,
