The month of September is a special one in South Africa, and this year, its particularly special to us! It’s Heritage Month and World Tourism Month. Also, with interprovincial travel opened again, it is an ideal time to rediscover our beautiful country. Travel local and experience the awe-inspiring cultures and heritages that make South Africa what it is.
When you think of South Africa, what first comes to mind is the King Protea, the Springbok, and the Blue Crane – all national symbols of our breath-taking country. What do these all have in common? They all play a major role in the upholding of national unity and provide South Africans with a platform for valuing their ethnicity, culture, and nationality. South Africans are a group of friendly, hard-working people who that embraces diversity and love each other’s differences – a beautiful sentiment and one to live by.
September in South Africa calls upon its people to use Heritage Month to foster social unity, nation-building and a form shared national identity and how better can we do that by travelling around our beautiful country, learning about the South African heritage and cultures, and visiting our iconic national treasures.
Zulu Dancers
Travel to Kwa-Zulu Natal and experience one of South Africa’s most iconic cultural traditions – Zulu Dancing. These dancers can be found in various locations in Kwa-Zulu Natal such as on the beachfront or at the Phezula Game Park. Watching the dancers move with such passion, grace, agility (and a little humour) is a sight to behold – admiring the dancers, fully dressed in their traditional attire, dancing, singing, and beating the drums is quite spectacular. The perfect outing to feel the rhythm of Africa.
San Rock Paintings
The San, otherwise known as Bushmen, are indigenous people of Southern Africa. There are thousands of examples of San rock art and these ancient cultural rock paintings can be found in the Drakensberg, Cederberg, and the Eastern Cape. Varying from paintings of people and wildlife, initially, it was believed the paintings were a record of everyday life but much of the artwork is considered to display the specific San experience of journeys in the spirit world and of San Shamans.
These depictions of a world we can only imagine today are interesting and thought-provoking – a definite must for those who are interested in history and the heritage of South Africa.
The Nelson Mandela Capture Site
Images via Midlands Meander and SA Good News
Nelson Mandela is the former president of South Africa who is praised for his efforts to establish racial, social, and political equality in South Africa. The Nelson Mandela Capture Site, located in Howick, KZN, is a culturally historical exhibition that pays homage to the site at which Nelson Mandela was apprehended for his anti-Apartheid activism. The monument comprises 50 steel columns that are between 6 and 9.5 metres in height which form an image of the late president when viewed at the correct angle. The columns line up so that, at a specific angle, they create a two-dimensional image of Mr Mandela. A true display of his greatness and a must-visit during your travels.
Robben Island
Heading over to the shores of Cape Town, Robben Island is an island in Table Bay and is situated west of the coast of Bloubergstrand, north of Cape Town. Over 300 years ago, this island was a place of exile where leaders would send those who they considered outcasts and troublemakers. In the late 20th century the islands buildings were used as a maximum-security prison for political prisoners. This is where the Former President of South Africa served 18 years for political activism. Tourists can visit his cell and can see the world through his eyes, looking out the window upon the prison yard – a view Nelson Mandela endured for 18 years of his 27-year prison sentence. Robben Island was declared a World Heritage Site as the buildings on the island are a reminder of a sad history but also to show the power of the human spirit, freedom, and the victory of democracy over oppression.
Table Mountain
One of the 7 Wonders of the World, Table Mountain is a sight of beauty and strength. Known as Table Mountain for its flat surface, which was created through thousands of years of erosion. The view from the top is extraordinary and can be admired by either taking an adventurous hike up the mountain or by a ride on the cable car. One of the few conservation areas in the world that is entirely surrounded by a city, Table Mountain is home to a variety of wildlife and fauna, from dassies to porcupines and close to 1500 plant species. This is one adventure you can’t miss out on!
Cradle of Humankind

This astonishing World Heritage Site is truly remarkable. The Cradle of Humankind lies mostly in the province of Gauteng, slightly extending into the North West Province, covering over 40 0000 hectares. The sit is comprised of a dozen limestone domes/caves which contain fossilized remains from an ancient world – forms of hominids (the ancestors of modern humans), animals, and plants. The domes are filled with significant fossil finds, including the well-known fossils “Mrs Ples” and “Little Foot”. If you are interested in ancestry, history and what the world was like millions of years ago – this is the perfect spot for you.
After being in lockdown for what seems like an eternity, you must be itching to escape the restrictions and have a change of scenery. Why not get out and discover the beauty of South Africa all while learning about its interesting and diverse cultures and heritage? With it being Heritage Month and World Tourism Month – it’s the best time to do so! Go out, travel locally, and make memories to last a lifetime.
Just remember to keep safe, sanitise, wear your mask and flatten the curve. Travel may be permitted but we MUST continue to follow the rules for the safety of ourselves and those around us.
Safe travels and we look forward to welcoming you back!
Nobody could have predicted at the start of 2020, that a little-known virus called Covid-19 would be lurking on the horizon, about to deal a devastating economic blow.
When it snuck across our borders more than four months ago, it brought with it an unprecedented global ban on travel and tourism. With flights grounded and borders closed, travel came to a resounding halt, and along with it, the livelihood of millions of people.
With everyone being urged to #staysafe and #stayhome, those who rely on the hospitality sector to survive have been left to wonder what their industry will look like on the other side, and if it would even still be standing when the corona-dust settles?
It’s no secret that many businesses in the hospitality industry are facing severe job losses and closure. And, whilst taking to the streets is a wonderful way to create awareness and call for change; it will be in vain if we do not rally the support of our fellow South Africans.
He adds that even the smallest of gestures could potentially help your favourite getaway spot stay open, keep a person employed for longer or put food on the table for a family.
Here are 5 easy ways that you can help the hospitality industry weather the COVID-storm now that our inter provincial borders are open and we are able to travel locally again:
1. Book now, travel later. If you can, take advantage of the fabulous specials that your club and many hotels and resorts are offering to members and guests who book and pay in advance. Plus, you can secure your 2021 travel at a great rate for a later date.
2. Take a day trip.If you’re not wanting to travel now, why not support your local resorts by making use of their facilities (like the health spa, golf course or restaurant), if they’re already open. You will not only be making a difference; you will also reap the benefits of some much-needed R&R.
3. Give them a shout out on social media. Don’t underestimate the power of your support by sharing, liking and following your Club’s social posts and holiday destinations on social media.
This does not cost you anything, but your time. And, by following your Club and property pages, you’ll also be the first to know about their great offers. Finally, if you’ve had a great experience in the past, take the time to write an awesome review on their page.
4. Don’t haggle – be kind. Tourism has had a really rough ride, so if possible, don’t haggle for a better deal. Also, be kind to the staff when you do visit any resort, or make use of their services, remember they’re under huge pressure to ensure you have a great time, regardless of the strict new measures they’ve had to put in place.
5. Buy a voucher for friends and family. Think outside the box when it comes to gifts this year and buy experiences rather than things. Why not consider a meal or spa voucher from one of our resorts, which can be used in many instances over the next year or two?
There’s no doubt that this pandemic will pass, and we’ll get back to normal – albeit a ‘new normal’. When that happens, let’s make sure that our hospitality industry doesn’t only survive, but it thrives. We live in a beautiful country, so support local.
Many people are under the impression that you need to book a long holiday away in order to truly feel refreshed. However, research shown that mini-breaks throughout the year, rather than one longer, annual break, are far more beneficial than you might think! A recent study in the Journal of Happiness Studies proved that after just two days on holiday, individuals felt refreshed – physically, emotionally and mentally.
“It’s no secret that most of us are needing a break more now than ever,” says Shaun Lamont, Managing Director of Club Leisure Management, a leading leisure company that manages multiple holiday clubs and properties across South Africa. He adds that a recent study by the South African Depression and Anxiety Group revealed that 65% of respondents felt stressed or very stressed during lockdown.
“There is no doubt that a hike in the Berg or a swim in the sea would go a long way in cheering us up, but because lockdown still prohibits leisure travel, we have make lemonade from lemons!” How? Shaun believes that the next best thing is taking a few days off work. “Whether you choose to take leave for a week, or just a weekend, you’ll reap the same health benefits either way.”
He adds that so many people forgo their leave days simply because they’re too busy at work or worse, because they feel guilty and feel like they are ‘shirking their responsibilities’. Some are just fearful that they may lose their job. “This, as the research has shown, is in fact counterintuitive,” he says.
He gives 3 more reasons why you should take leave and invest in a mini-break:
1. Improve your mood and be more productive: The biggest boost in happiness associated with a mini break comes during the anticipation of the time to relax and unwind, which was shown to increase happiness for eight weeks prior, according to a study published in the Journal of Applied Research in Quality of Life. It also found that happiness makes you 12% more productive, so the excitement of an upcoming break may result in you churning out more work beforehand.
2. Less work to come back to: If you take a quick day or two off, you are unlikely to come back to the tsunami of work that would’ve be waiting for you after a long break. An added plus – you will remember your password too!
3. Spread out your leave: Most people are able to take only 15 days leave per year. So, it makes sense to take lots of mini two-day breaks rather than one long break. Plus, you will trick yourself into thinking you have enjoyed a lot more leave than you actually have.
Key to really relaxing and unwinding is to switch off. Shaun says, “Take a hard line against social media and reading or watching the news. Instead spend your mornings soaking up the Winter sun and playing games in the garden, spend your afternoons napping and your evenings relaxing with your loved ones. He adds that it doesn’t end there. “Use your time off to plan your post-lockdown mini-break – through your club. Take advantage of your club offers now, so that your anticipated holiday happiness ‘boost’ lasts a little longer!
“At the end of the day, taking a well-deserved and much-needed break will not only leave you feeling happier, but will also give you an opportunity to make magical memories,” Shaun concludes.
